Brynmawr (somtimes hyphenated to Bryn-mawr, in Welsh meaning "big hill") is a market town in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent, traditional county of Brecknockshire, mid Wales. The arrival of mining and the iron industry in the early 1800s transformed the settlement from the small village of Gwaen Helygen into a prosperous town. The Brynmwar/Ebbw Vale conurbation has a population of approximately 33,000.

Brynmawr is the highest town in Wales, approximately 1,350 feet above sea level, nestling high above the Clydach Gorge on the Heads of the Valleys road. A market town with a population of five and a half thousand people. The traditional market itself has diminished somewhat but the focal point of the town is still the Market Square with its Market Hall, now a cinema and theatre proudly presenting first release films and productions from the local amateur operatic society. Around the Market square, the trading community offers traditional, family oriented shops with a friendly and personal service.
