Derek Brockway

Derek Brockway
Derek Brockway (born 1967) is a Welsh Weather Forecasting director at BBC Wales. As well as preparing and presenting the lunchtime and nightly TV forecasts for BBC Wales Today, Derek also presents weather bulletins for BBC Radio Wales.

He was born in Barry, south Wales, and now lives in the village of Miskin. Derek attended Barry Boys Comprehensive and took A-levels in Mathematics, Physics and Geology. On leaving school in 1986 he joined the Met Office as an observer, working mainly at Cardiff Weather Centre but with spells at Cardiff Airport, Birmingham International Airport, and eight months in the Falkland Islands. After further study, in 1995 he became a radio forecaster in the Midlands, a year later moving to London to broadcast GMTV’s early Sunday morning weather to the whole of the [UK]. However, a year in London was enough for Derek, and after working in Bracknell as an Environmental Consultant, returned home to Wales. Derek joined BBC Wales Today in September 1997 replacing Helen Willetts.

Derek has had a lifetime fascination with weather and has presented a TV show (Derek’s Welsh Weather) and radio show (Derek's Lightning Guide to Weather) on the subject. On BBC Radio Wales Derek has also had four radio series entitled Weatherman Walking before the programme was converted into a new television series.

His other TV appearances include X-Ray a Welsh consumer programme and The Big Welsh Challenge a programme in which Derek was challenged to learn Welsh. A clip of Derek losing an umbrella in strong wind and rain has been shown on the BBC’s Auntie’s Bloomers which is a blooper show.

Derek is a very popular forecaster, famed for his enthusiastic and energetic style of weather presenting.
