Works to transform the end of Canada Road in Gabalfa have been completed. The area, which was previously dominated by the highway, has now been redesigned into a community focal point making the street more attractive to residents, schoolchildren and parents.

The project is part of the Neighbourhood Renewal Schemes Programme which funds environmental improvements all over Cardiff.

The improvements to the space have included creating a larger area for pedestrians, introducing new paving and street furniture and using paving across the carriageway to instil caution in drivers as they approach the adjacent Ysgol Mynydd Bychan.

As part of the project, Cardiff Council along with Celfwaith Art Agency commissioned artists Heather Parnell and David Mackie to design and install a bespoke paving artwork.

Pupils from Ysgol Mynydd Bychan were involved in sessions to help design the pavers.  Drawing inspiration from the colonial names of the surrounding streets, the pupils worked with the artists to interpret themes and images from Wales, Canada, Africa, Australia, Newfoundland, and New Zealand.  The result is a paving ‘rug’ created from a patchwork of unique patterns and motifs inspired by the different countries’ art, design and botany. Headteacher, Sian Evans said: “It has been fantastic for the pupils to be involved with the project and to see their ideas transformed into an integral part of the scheme.”

Cardiff Councillor Judith Woodman, Executive Member for communities, housing and social justice said: “Schemes such as this one help to improve local environments and I am delighted that the children from the local community have had an opportunity to improve their area”.
