A donkey will lead a procession through the centre of Cardiff this weekend as parishioners mark Palm Sunday (April 1).

Following behind will be people from the city centre’s churches, waving 7ft palms and singing hymns as they mark the start of Holy Week – the week leading up to Easter. They will walk the length of Queen Street, starting at City United Reformed Church at Windsor Place and ending at St John the Baptist Church in the Hayes.

It will be one of many Palm Sunday processions held in churches across Wales as they commemorate Christ’s triumphal entry to Jerusalem when, riding on a donkey, he was greeted by people waving palms and praising him.

Revd Liz Griffiths, Vicar of St John’s Church, said, “This was the start of Jesus’ journey leading to the cross on Good Friday, and his resurrection on Easter Day. As followers of Jesus, we believe that story is good news for this city of Cardiff and for all people. Our journey with a donkey today through our busy city streets says that the hope and new life that Jesus’ death and resurrection brings us is as relevant for our crowded and pressured city lives today as it was 2,000 years ago.”

The event is being organised by the Cardiff City and Bay branch of Cytun – Churches Together – and will begin at 3pm. The donkey is on loan from Kidwelly.
