Doorstep criminals use a variety of tactics to deceive residents to get into their homes. They frequently claim to be from the water board, an electricity company, local council or other organisations and they will try to pressurise or confuse the person who answers the door. Often they may carry an official looking Photo-ID, and wear an official looking jacket or overall.

Rogue traders are also just as likely to knock on the door without any warning as they are to be invited to the home. The key way to identify a rogue trader is the way they devise their contracts, or rather, the things they fail make clear in them. Critically, any contract concluded at residents’ homes legally has to have cancellation rights provided in writing; a failure to do this is a criminal offence. Similarly, a failure to offer a reasonable price constitutes a banned practice under Trading Standards legislation. Most worryingly, many rogue traders approach home-owners by offering to do regular maintenance work; this work is often entirely unnecessary, and the trader can even cause damage that wasn’t there before.

In the case of distraction burglaries – a crime often linked to rogue trading – whilst the home-owner is at the door, an accomplice may be entering the premises elsewhere, quickly searching for cash and small valuables they can sell on. In other cases, the distraction can even lure the homeowner away from specific rooms whilst the criminals carry out their theft.

Cabinet Member Councillor Lynda Thorne, who is responsible for Housing, Communities and Social Justice in Cardiff, said:

“Tackling cold callers and putting a stop to these truly despicable doorstep crimes is a key priority for this administration and, on a personal level, something I feel very strongly about.

“I want to move away from the misconception that these are simply ‘cowboy’ traders who haven’t done a job properly as this undermines the seriousness of what is actually going on here.

“These are calculated crimes carried out by unscrupulous people who are only interested in making a profit, quite literally at the expense of others.”

“The price that is paid by those who have been targeted by door step criminality is not just limited to financial loss but also includes emotional trauma and scarring, which can be equally if not more difficult to address.

“This is one of the reasons why we are increasing our efforts to tackle door step crimes but we cannot do this alone.

“We are already working closely with a range of other agencies, including the Police, voluntary and business sectors, with the aim of increasing awareness about cold calling and door step crimes and offering advice and support to anyone who thinks they have or may become a target for this type of unlawful activity.

“However, we also believe that everyone can do their bit to help and would therefore encourage communities to work with us on this.

“Keeping an eye out for neighbours and loved ones, particularly if they are elderly or vulnerable, and reporting any suspicious activity to us won’t cost you a thing but it may well help to save someone from losing their life-savings or suffering the emotional pain of becoming a victim.”

Trading Standards recommends the following tips to avoid the Rogue Traders:

Before they knock at the door:

• Consider setting up a password with your utility suppliers
• Trading Standards and South Wales police support a ‘Nominated Neighbour’ scheme whereby vulnerable members of the community can nominate a neighbour who will check the callers’ identity and then return with the     caller
• Consider installing a wireless intercom with a Bogus Caller Button or Pendant Buttons with the Community Alarm Service at Cardiff Council
• Do not be afraid to chain your door or speak to caller while your door     is locked
• If in doubt, keep them out

When they knock at the door:

• Be wary of any business literature that only gives a mobile phone number. They are difficult to trace
• ID Cards are very easy to fake on a computer. Use a phone number from the telephone directories or directory enquires to see if the caller is     genuine
• If you let someone in – stay with them at all times
• Never part with money, documents or other things whatever they say
• Get more than one estimate for work
• Official organisations usually write first. Have you had a letter?
• If you feel afraid, harassed, threatened or intimidated by a caller, call the Police on 999 straight away

Cardiff Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Ashley Govier added: “Our strategy for tackling this issue is wide ranging and we intend to cut these criminals off from all angles and at all levels.

“From my perspective, this includes making the environment these criminals like to operate in untenable, for example by extending our ‘no cold-calling zones’ and ‘nominate a neighbour’ schemes across the city. `

“By working with other agencies and the wider community we will make Cardiff a no-go area for the people involved in this type of crime.”

South Wales Police Detective Chief Supt, Stuart Mckenzie said:  “The information the public provide us with is critical in the successful detection and prevention of such crimes. I would urge anyone who comes across such operators to contact the police so we can stop these people from profiting at the expense of innocent people.”

The incident happened in Claude Road at around 2.45am on Saturday, April 28.

Police wish to trace a man who was seen in nearby Oakfield Street at around the time of the incident.

He is described as white, wearing a light-coloured hooded top and trainers, and was running in the direction of Newport Road.

Officers want to hear from this man or anyone who may have seen him.

They are also appealing for information from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in Claude Road and Oakfield Street areas on Saturday morning between 1am and 3am.

A major incident room has been set up at Cardiff Central Police Station and the investigation is being led by Detective Superintendent Stuart McKenzie.

On Monday (April 16), at around 1.45am, a local man called the police when he was awoken by the crash of a vehicle as it reversed through the glass doors of the Coral betting shop, which is in the Market Square area of the Town.

Three males – one equipped with a crowbar – headed for the shop counter. A fourth person remained in the vehicle.

Almost as soon as they arrived at the counter, the three males headed back to the vehicle and drove away from the scene along Victoria Street and into Church Street.

Officers suspect they had lost their nerve after realising they had underestimated the shop’s security. They got away with nothing but caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

The vehicle used in the incident, a dark coloured Diahatsu Fourtrak, was recovered – it had been dumped at a nearby location called Kingsley Terrace what police believe to be a short time later.

It is now known the vehicle used was stolen from New Tredegar, Gwent.

Detective Sergeant Roy Portlock, said: “We are appealing to anybody with information about this incident to come forward.

“We are looking for four people, and believe they may well be from the local area.

“We know the vehicle used was stolen from the New Tredegar area so somebody there may have noticed something suspicious.

“Or people may have heard something late that night as they dumped the vehicle to make their escape.

“The CCTV footage captures the whole scenario and it shows just how reckless they were. It was very lucky nobody was seriously hurt.”

At around 11.30pm, the male victim was walking along Sanquhar Street near the Lidl store towards East Tyndall Street when he was approached by three men and a woman.

The group demanded money from him before trying to steal his wallet.

The victim was then assaulted and suffered a broken arm and facial injuries. He was conveyed to UHW for treatment.

Officers are conducting CCTV enquiries and wish to appeal to the public for information.

DC Liz Lumsden from Cardiff Bay CID said: “Enquiries are ongoing to trace the people responsible.

“This incident was totally unprovoked and whilst it is fortunate no property was stolen, the victim has suffered painful injuries.

“We’re appealing to anyone who can recall being out in the area who may have seen or heard anything, or anyone who may have information about the perpetrators to contact police.”

Kane Austin, age 15, of Grays Gardens, Graig Y Rhacca was given a two-year ASBO at Cwmbran Youth Court on 3rd April 2012 after a regular series of abusive, anti-social and aggressive incidents in his local area.

Despite numerous interventions as part of the Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership’s well-established four strikes process, Kane’s behaviour continued.

The Anti-Social Behaviour Order prevents Kane Austin, anywhere within the Caerphilly County Borough Council area from:

• Acting or inciting others to act in an anti-social manner likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not of the same household
• Throwing items at any person
• Throwing any items at any property not belonging to him or without the owners consent
• Urinating in a public place other than a public lavatory
• Being together in a public place in a group of two or more persons behaving in a manner likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, or in a manner likely to cause a person to fear for their safety or the safety of their property or vehicles
• Being drunk or consuming alcohol in any public place other than licensed premises
• Being under the influence of any illegal substance in a public place

In addition to the ASBO, Kane is also subject to an Individual Support Order, which means he must work with the local Youth Offending Service in order to help prevent a repetition of the behaviour which led to the making of the Anti-Social Behaviour Order.

Rob Hartshorn, Head of Public Protection at Caerphilly County Borough Council said, “We take a tough stance on anti-social behaviour in our county borough, and we are adamant that a very small minority of people will not cause nuisance and disturbance to our residents”.

He continued, “I sincerely hope this tough action will be a warning to others that their behaviour will not be tolerated”.

Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer for Bedwas, Stuart Lewis said, “The Anti-Social Behaviour Order placed upon this young person sends out a clear message that behaving in this way will not be tolerated in the local community.  Our aim is to protect the community and I am sure that the quality of life for these residents who have been previously subjected to anti-social behaviour will now improve.”

Breaching an Anti-Social Behaviour Order is a criminal offence, and will result in the individual concerned being arrested, charged and having to make an appearance before the courts.

The Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership is a multi-agency organisation, whose statutory bodies are Caerphilly County Borough Council, Gwent Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Aneurin Bevan Health Board, Gwent Police Authority and Wales Probation Trust. It works to reduce levels of crime, disorder, anti-social behaviour and fear of crime in the local area.

Residents suffering from anti-social behaviour are encouraged to report this to Gwent Police. Victim Support is also there to provide support on 0845 30 30 900.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to the break-ins and information on the whereabouts of a number of distinctive items.

Homes in Orbit Street and Bedford Street were broken into on Sunday while a flat in Claude Road was burgled on Saturday morning when the front door was forced open.

It is a believed a pillowcase with a butterfly design was used to steal items, including an Xbox, iPod, and Top Man cardigan, from the ground floor flat in Claude Road.

Also stolen were Rolo, Kit Kat and Little Britain mugs.

The following day two further burglaries were reported in Orbit Street and Bedford Street.

Significant items stolen include:

• Lenovo Thinkpad
• Sony Vaio laptop
• HTC Touch mobile phone
• Sony video camera in a grey and black case.
• PlayStation 3
• Toshiba laptop
• Accurist man’s watch
• Fuji Fine Pixel camera.
• iPod Touch with pink cover

Detective Sergeant Stuart Wales said: “Being a victim of a burglar is a traumatic experience and therefore reducing and detecting these offences is a priority for South Wales Police.

“We are carrying out enquiries into each of these burglaries but would very much appreciate the help of the public.

“People can help by reporting any suspicious behaviour they might have noticed in these streets over the weekend, particularly in Claude Road where we think a decorated pillowcase has been used to steal property.

“We are equally keen to hear from anyone who knows where these stolen items might be. It could be that they have been offered for sale somewhere.”

Of the 1,210 total victims in Wales last year, more than a fifth – 278 – hadn’t reached secondary school age and more than 80  were five and under. However the majority of offences, 932 were reported against 11-17-year-olds.

The figures from all four police forces in Wales cover various sex crimes including rape, incest and abuse of children through prostitution and pornography and reveal that more than  one in three of all sex crimes* are committed against children. At 1,009, the number of girl victims was five times higher than boys – 185. In 16 cases the gender was unknown.

The statistics also reveal that 50 of the under-18s had already been victims of sex offences but only two of the forces were able to supply this information.

For the last four years the NSPCC has obtained figures through a Freedom of Information request from all 43 police forces in England and Wales and during this period there has been no significant decrease in reported offences. The number of convictions has risen by around one-quarter from 1,747 in 2007 to 2,135 in 2010. But this still means fewer than one in ten offences result in someone being sentenced.

The NSPCC, which runs four sexual abuse programmes in Wales, is now calling for:

• Children to be taught how to protect themselves from sexual abuse.
• The public to have better information about the risks and how to prevent it.
• Treatment programmes to be available for all young people and adults who present a sexual risk to children.
• Therapeutic services to be available for all child victims of sex offences.

Des Mannion, NSPCC national head of service for Wales, said: “A concentrated effort has to be made if we are to start reducing this distressing level of offences, many of which are committed on extremely young and helpless children.

“The Welsh Government has to start treating the situation as seriously as they would if faced with an outbreak of chronic disease.

“We also need a clearer picture of what is happening between an offence being reported and someone appearing in court. The police are doing their best to bring prosecutions but we need to understand why there is such a huge disparity between the two figures. The fact there are repeat offences against some of the children also shows not all are just one-off incidents.

“The NSPCC is doing what it can by using information like this from the police to tailor our treatment programmes- different approaches are needed depending on the age of the child. We have also set up a Schools Service which aims to work with 117,600 seven to 11 year olds over the next four years to help them recognise and protect themselves from abuse.”

But we can’t tackle this problem by ourselves. It requires a major effort from government and the public to give children the protection they need and to provide more therapeutic programmes so the young victims of abuse can start to rebuild their lives.”

Officers would like to speak to them in relation to the theft of a significant amount of cash from a nearby house.

At around midday, the 63 year-old victim was walking along Rheola Street when he was approached by two males with a large white van selling mattresses. When he agreed to buy one, he was given help by two males to take it to his home address – a flat in the area.

Once the two males returned to the van and left the scene, the man realised money had been taken from his property.

One of the males was white, with short fair hair and smooth skin. He was between 25 – 30 years of age, approximately 5ft 11, and spoke with a welsh accent. He was wearing casual clothes.

The second male is described as having short, dark hair with a stocky build. He was approximately 5ft 10, and around 30 years-old. He also spoke with a Welsh accent and was wearing casual clothing.

DI Phil Cam said: “We are confident that other people would have been approached that day and can help us identify who these men are. They may have travelled around so we are also looking to speak to people beyond Mountain Ash or Cynon who may have been approached.”

Throughout the coming months Officers of Denbighshire Trading Standards and North Wales Police will be carrying out joint patrols in marked vehicles on the look out for rogue traders committing crimes on the public’s doorstep.

Ian Millington of Denbighshire Trading Standards, said “Doorstep crime and rogue traders cost the public millions of pounds every year, they target the elderly and vulnerable people in our communities, but with these joint patrols we are hoping to either catch them or send out a warning to such traders and show them that their activities are will not be tolerated”.

North Wales Police Sergeant Tony Latham said  “We fully support this initiative and the collaboration with Trading Standards  in North Wales to tackle these issues.  Doorstep crime takes many forms; including unnecessary or poor quality work, false officials, distraction burglaries and scrap metal theft.  Joint ‘high profile’ patrols, will send out a clear message that we are working together to relentlessly pursue those who carry out these unacceptable and distasteful crimes”.

The three step plan

Remember genuine callers will not mind waiting. It’s your home. You don’t have to let anyone in!

One: If in doubt, keep them out. It sounds simple, but if you don’t let someone in – they will go away. Don’t let them pressure you into opening the door.

Two: Be prepared. Be in control. Think about what to say to doorstep cold callers in advance. And keep a list of key contact numbers near your phone so you can check out legitimate callers. Ask all other unwanted callers to go away.

Three: Call a neighbour or the police. Contact a local relative or nominated neighbour who can help verify a cold caller. If you think someone is a rogue trader call us on 101. To report a distraction burglar or rogue trader who has taken your money and is still in the area – call 999.

The victim is an elderly gentleman, who has been left very distressed by the break-in which happened overnight between Wednesday March 14 and Thursday, March 15.

A number of items of sentimental value were stolen including the gold wedding ring of his late wife which was engraved with the letters “IP”.

Also stolen were a black Hewlett Packard computer and gold necklaces, including a crucifix necklace and chain with a solid gold heart.

Despite fingertip searches by specialist teams and searches of a number of addresses across the community, the firearm has not been located and until it is recovered by police it presents a risk to the public.

Local people are being urged to contact 999 if they know of its whereabouts, and are advised not to handle the object in any way.

People who know where the weapon is, who are concerned about revealing their identity can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Superintendent Simon Clarke said: “Despite sustained efforts, we haven’t located the weapon yet. There are a number of things which concern me about this whole incident at this point, but the one priority for me and my team is to locate the firearm to get it out of harms way.

“If it has been hidden, somebody somewhere may know where it is or may come across it soon. I’d remind that person that if they do not come forward they are committing a serious criminal offence.

“The weapon may well have been dumped somewhere, which concerns me even more because it could literally be found by anyone. My advice is do not handle the weapon in any way, and contact us on 999 because we have officers who are equipped to deal with it safely.

“We will continue to do everything we can to locate it,” he added.

The hand gun is very distinctive. It is silver and has a white handle.

A number of addresses have been searched by firearms officers across Rhydyfelin. Specialist search teams have also been working in the area.

Superintendent Clarke added: “Gun crime is extremely rare in South Wales, let alone Rhydyfelin. People may have been alarmed by the police activity and the presence of some armed officers. I stress this is only a precautionary measure. We must ensure the safety of our officers. We do not know if the weapon is loaded, so until we have the firearms in our possession and know for certain, we must presume that it is.”

Neighbourhood officers have been carrying out house to house enquiries in the area, and contact has been made with the education authority to engage with young people about personal safety and the dangers of firearms.

To date, three local people, a 37 year-old male and two boys, aged 12 and 15, have been questioned by officers in relation to the possession of a firearm and criminal damage.

Two sheep were discovered by the farmer who owned them on Tuesday afternoon at around 4.30pm, on land adjacent to Dynea Road, Rhydyfelin.

“The sentences handed down today demonstrate that terrorism is not a remote issue. In Wales we have been working resolutely to counter terrorism for several years and this work will continue with vigour.

“This was a lengthy and detailed investigation led by West Midlands Counter Terrorism unit and South Wales Police officers and staff worked closely with them over many months to ensure those involved were brought to justice.

“But we are only too aware that our efforts do not end here with today’s sentence.

“The Wales Extremism and Counter Terrorism Unit and South Wales Police will continue to work with local communities to tackle any individuals or groups that engage in terrorism or extremism or promote terrorist ideologies. They have no place within Cardiff or South Wales.

“We recognise that this trial may have raised very real concerns in Cardiff and other areas. We know that the problem of extremism and radicalisation is an issue that concerns everyone in today’s world.

“It is a problem that will not be solved by police activity alone but by communities working together.

“South Wales Police is proud to have strong links with our communities, not just in Cardiff but across our force area and also the long standing support of Cardiff’s Muslim communities. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Osborne, Senior National Co-ordinator Counter Terrorism said :

“This was one of the most significant and complex counter terrorism operations of recent years.

“We had a network of highly dangerous men based in three cities who were working together to plan terrorist attacks in the UK.

“Had we not taken action to disrupt this network, their actions could have resulted in serious casualties or fatalities.

“Given the level of threat we faced a large scale covert operation was started to put these men under surveillance.

“At the height of the investigation over the Christmas period of 2010 nearly 1,000 police officers and staff were involved nationally, all showing an extraordinary level of commitment.

“Officers from the national CT network worked alongside colleagues from the Metropolitan, Staffordshire and South Wales Police forces and the Security Service.

“These men were arrested when the balance between public safety and gathering evidence meant that we could not run the operation longer.

“This plot clearly demonstrates that there are still people living in our communities who are intent on doing us harm and the public must remain vigilant and aware.”

Two Community Support Officers (CSOs) will spend part of their time tackling issues in local woodlands, as part of a new agreement.

Community Support Officers (CSOs) Philip Barclay and Stephen Cowles will patrol the Wye Valley woodlands from Monmouth down to Chepstow and on to Wentwood, working closely with the Forestry Commission Wales Local Area Manager, Richard Gable.

The two officers, from the Monmouth and Usk Neighbourhood Policing Teams, are jointly funded by Gwent Police and Forestry Commission Wales. They will also have the use of a Forestry Commission Wales van to help them cover the area.

They will provide reassurance in the area and gather intelligence on any anti-social or criminal activity.

The immediate priorities for the officers will include protecting the environment against fly-tipping, criminal damage and off-road biking and helping to prevent visitors from becoming victims of vehicle crime.

Local forestry staff spend as much as 20% of their time dealing with the consequences of illegal acts. The CSOs will be working to prevent and deal with any incidents to enable Forestry Commission Wales to concentrate on looking after the woodlands.

Richard Gable said, “The Wye Valley woodlands are very popular but there has been an increase in anti-social use which spoils the enjoyment of those who visit the area on a daily basis for the beautiful scenery.

“Forestry Commission Wales already has a good working relationship with Gwent Police and the appointment of the CSOs should reassure the public of our determination not to tolerate any selfish or illegal behaviour.”

CSO Philip Barclay will focus on the northern end of the Wye Valley from Monmouth down, with CSO Stephen Cowles concentrating on Wentwood.

Inspector Michael Boycott of Gwent Police said, “Our CSOs will be a valuable resource to the woodland area and surrounding wards and we hope that, by working together, we will not only reduce anti-social behaviour but also make the environment an even more pleasurable place for people to live in and visit.”

The arrangement will run for three years, during which time the officers will also spend some of their time on other police duties.

Scores of officers from South Wales Police have been acting on information provided by members of public from the region’s communities and raided dozens of properties from Swansea to Cardiff and Barry to the Rhondda.

During Operation Atlas, 86 people were arrested and almost £115,000 cash was seized.

ANPR operations resulted in seizing seven cars and partnership work was undertaken with British Transport Police, DIP (Drugs Intervention Programme) and community safety partnerships. Railway stations, Cardiff Airport and main transport routes were also targeted.

After the houses were raided and arrests made PCSOs delivered leaflets to neighbouring homes and streets providing advice and reassurance to local householders.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Hurley of the Specialist Crime Investigations Unit at South Wales Police, who headed Operation Atlas, said: “During the past week’s operation we have successfully disrupted many of those who have been suspected of dealing in drugs.

“Drugs are a source of misery and blight communities and the message is simple – they will not be tolerated.

“I want to reassure the public that these targeted, proactive operations will continue. Through tough enforcement and positive community engagement, we will strive to keep South Wales a safe environment for everyone to enjoy.

“These raids have led to dozens of suspects being arrested and drugs such as cannabis, amphetamine and heroin were seized and will be destroyed.

Police Community Support Officers patrolled the affected streets and delivered thousands of reassurance leaflets to neighbours.

DCI Hurley added: “Personal assets, suspected of being funded by criminal activities were also seized by officers under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Applications will now be made to confiscate these items and specialist investigators will begin to set about proving they have, in all probability, been funded through criminal activity.

“Drug dealers should know that there is no hiding place, we will seek you out and bring you to justice.”

The operation was the latest to be held by police following the launch of the Heroin Ruins Live campaign in October aimed at encouraging members of the public to come forward with information on those who deal and supply drugs.

It saw officers execute search warrants at numerous addresses across the western area of the force, as well as carry out patrols in known hotspot areas.

Over 5,000 leaflets were delivered to residents to inform them of the police activity in their area and to appeal for them to provide information to the police.

Drug support workers worked alongside officers to promote rehabilitation services, while council street cleaners worked to clear up discarded needles.

Among the 31 arrests, 19 were for possession with intent to supply drugs.

The value of the drugs seized was £43,370 and includes heroin, cannabis and amphetamine. A cannabis factory was also discovered at New Road in Skewen which had 65 mature plants. Three vehicles were also seized from suspected criminals.

Around £2,400 in cash was also recovered and police will instigate Proceeds of Crime Act proceedings to seize the assets of those involved in drugs supply.

Detective Inspector Jason Davies, who led the operation, said: “This operation has seen us build on the success we have already had as a result of the Heroin Ruins Lives campaign.

“It was the latest in a number of many planned events to target those who are clearly impacting on their neighbours and local communities as a result of drug supply.

“I would like to thank those who have already provided us with information and ask that they continue to do so and maintain the momentum of the positive outcomes to date.

“The police activity right across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot has sent out a clear message to those who supply drugs that there is no hiding place, we will seek you out and bring you to justice.”

Police in Cardiff continuing to investigating an attempted armed robbery at a bookmakers shop have released a CCTV image of a man they wish to trace in connection with the incident.

It happened at around 9.00am on Thursday December 8 at the William Hill Bookmakers, Wellfield Road, Roath.

A man armed with a small kitchen knife entered the premises and threatened a member of staff, demanding money is handed over. The victim refused to hand anything over and locked himself into a room. The suspect then left the premises.

Police want to speak to the man in CCTV still number 1 in connection with this incident.

Police investigating an assault in Church Street, Cardiff, are appealing for the information on a man captured on CCTV.

At around 11pm on November 28, a 20-year-old man was punched in the face by an unknown male demanding money.

Police want to speak to the man in CCTV still number 2 in connection with this incident.

On December 18 an unknown man entered the back garden of a house in Old Hill, St Mellons, Cardiff, and was seen looking into windows and attempting to open the patio doors.

No entry was gained.

DC Sarah Lee at St Mellons CID wants to speak to the man in CCTV still number 3 in connection with this incident.

At approximately 8.45pm, three men broke into the Sainsbury’s Store, Newbridge Road Industrial Estate, Pontllanfraith and stole a range of electrical goods including: three Samsung 40” LCD HD TVs; an emotion 23” digital TV; a Sharp 22” LCD TV; a Toshiba 19” HD ready TV and DVD player; an LG 19” TV; a Toshiba Blu-ray DVD player and a Sony iPod Speaker Dock.

At approximately 10pm, its believed the same three men broke into the Sainsbury store in Excalibur Drive, Thornhill and stole three televisions- a Samsung 40” and two 32” LCDs.

On each occasion the men left the store using a waiting vehicle, believed to be a silver saloon.

One of the men was wearing a balaclava and gloves; one had his hood up and another was wearing a grey woollen hat.

DC Steve Colston, from Rumney CID, South Wales Police, who is investigating the Thornhill incident said: “CCTV shows the men arriving in a silver car, believed to be a Vauxhall Vectra and stealing the goods and making off. On each occasion the incident lasted no more than five minutes.

“It could be that these goods were given away as Christmas presents the following day or sold by the burglars to make some cash over the festive period.

“But anyone who has bought, or is in possession, of any of these electrical items needs to be aware that they could be arrested for handling stolen property.”

They are also appealing for a key witnesses seen near the incident to come forward.

Two men from the Caerphilly area – one aged 18 from Senghenydd and another aged 19 from Abertridwr – were arrested on Saturday, October 1 on suspicion of assault.

They were questioned over the weekend and have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Daniel Edwards, 27, was assaulted in Park Place near the entrance of the Park Hotel at around 1.50am sustaining head injuries.

He was taken to the high dependency unit at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where his condition is currently described as stable.

It is believed an altercation began in Burger King, on Queen Street.

Detective Sergeant Stuart Wales said: “Daniel and his family have been updated regarding the two arrests which took place over the weekend.

“I would like to thank the members of the public who responded to our previous press appeals and contacted us about this incident.

“Despite these arrests, the investigation is still very much on-going and we are still appealing for witnesses. In particular we wish to trace a black male, aged 18 to 21, 5ft 10in tall, skinny build with a shaven head. He was wearing a dark satchel over his shoulder, a dark jumper and blue jeans.

“It is believed this individual was within close proximity of the assault and is therefore a key witness to this incident. I must streets he is considered a witness, not a suspect, and urge him to come forward.”

Properties in Llantrisant Street and Corbett Road were burgled on Friday night.

A Toshiba laptop, which had pink nail varnish on some of the keys, a Sony Vaio laptop and an iPod Nano were stolen from the house in Llantrisant Street where it is believed the burglars gain access through an unlocked back window sometime between 10.30pm and 2.30am.

A red suitcase and an Olympic white digital camera were stolen from the Aberdare Halls of Residence in Corbett Road at around 11pm.

Residents in the Roath and Cathays are reminded that burglaries traditionally increase in these areas at this tine of year when in excess of 42,000 students arrived in the city.

This seasonal rise also affects non-student households as criminals come to the area attracted by rich pickings that this influx creates.

A policing operation – Operation Saturn -  is underway in a bid to prevent burglaries

Detective Inspector Shane Ahmed said: “The latest Home Office figures show that overall burglary in Cardiff is down 2.2 per cent, the equivalent of 40 fewer homes being burgled over the year, but occasionally we do see increases, such as when university students arrive in Roath and Cathays for the start of the academic year.

“The vast majority of these burglaries are at insecure properties where doors and windows have been left open and we are constantly trying to get the message out to the community the importance of home security.”

During Operation Saturn last year, front doors were checked by Student Wardens who found that more than 100 front doors were unlocked making the homes accessible to opportunist criminals.

Residents are reminded to ensure their doors and windows are secure and not to leave valuables close to open doors and windows.

Over the coming weeks officers from different departments including CID, the neighbourhood policing team, response officers, and student liaison officer will be carrying out both high visibility and plain-clothed patrols, and conducting crime prevention exercises.

In the last two weeks, there have been five reports of pedal cycles being stolen from gardens, sheds and garages in the Torfaen area.

The thefts have occurred when bikes have been left in gardens or sheds and garages that were not properly secured.

In order to help keep your bike safe you should lock it securely in your shed, garage or property.
Sheds, garages and outbuildings need to be in a good physical condition and be fitted with a good locking system to keep thieves at bay.

Also, it is a good idea to cover and shed or garage windows so thieves cannot see your belongings inside.

If you need to leave your bike when you are out and about then carry a bike chain with you and lock it to a secure object, such as a lamppost.

Detective Inspector Leanne Brustad, of Torfaen Local Policing Unit, said: “Adults and children are still using their bikes regularly at this time of year and we want to make sure that their property remains safe and secure.

“When not using your bike, please lock it with a bike chain or store it in secured property, such as a garage, to reduce the likelihood of it being stolen by opportunistic thieves or scrap metal collectors who will sell on the bike for scrap value.

“Even if you are popping into the house or shop for a short while, it’s always important to secure your property.”

Barry Bowyer was arrested, in the Newport area, on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody.

Officers have also traced the white Ford Mondeo they were looking for. It was located in the Newport area.

A 26 year old woman from the Cwmbran area who was arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody at this time.

Officers received a call at approximately 3.45pm on Tuesday 6th September from a local resident concerned about the welfare of the man who was then found dead at a house in Harold Street after officers forced entry into the house.

The cause of death is yet to be established.

Anyone with any information that could assist the investigation is asked to call Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Specialist officers are supporting the family of the victim. There are officers in the area, carrying out enquiries  and anyone with any concerns or information can also speak to them.

They are trying to find 37 year old Barry Bowyer from Cwmbran (pictured).

He is described as 5’11” tall, of a slim build, with brown eyes and short dark brown hair.

He has a number of tattoos;

On his left arm he has a bird of paradise, the letters ‘EVS’, five dots and a picture of a waterfall.

On his right arm he has the words ‘Linda’ and ‘Brandon’.

He also has the letters ‘DP’ and the word ‘smile’ tattooed on his left leg.

It’s believed he could hold vital information that could assist police with enquiries.

Officers are also trying to trace a car – a white Ford Mondeo, registration number R717 VOA.

A 26 year old woman from the Cwmbran area who was arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody at this time.

Officers received a call at approximately 3.45pm on Tuesday 6th September from a local resident concerned about the welfare of the man who was then found dead at a house in Harold Street after officers forced entry into the house.

The cause of death is yet to be established.

The incident occurred at approximately 2.30am on Tuesday 30th August.

The 32 year old male taxi driver, driving a silver Toyota Corolla Verso, picked up two men on Corporation Road and took them, as requested, to Moorland Park in Lliswerry. On arrival one of them leaned forward, threatened the driver with a knife and demanded his takings and mobile phone.

A small amount of cash and a HTC mobile phone were handed over, and then the two men made off on foot through the Moorland Park housing estate.

The taxi driver was left shaken and with a scratch to his hand.

Male one (pictured in the above) is described as white, aged in his late 20s/early 30s, of thin build and approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall. He had narrow eyes, a pale complexion and blonde/light brown eyebrows. He was wearing a brown Adidas hooded jumper and wore the hood up.  He spoke with a local accent.

Male two is described as white, aged 20-25, of athletic build and approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall. He had short dark ruffled hair. He was wearing a blue hooded Adidas tracksuit top which was zipped up over his chin and also spoke with a local accent.

Officers then forced entry into a house on Harold Street where the man was found dead. The cause of death is yet to be established.

The woman who has been arrested remains in custody at this time being questioned.

Last weekend alone, 6 gardens have been targeted throughout the area.

Some of the items stolen have included garden lights, ornaments, and gardening tools.

Inspector Nigel Griffitsh said: “We’ve had a number of thefts in one weekend, so we are urging people to simple take measures to lessen the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

“Measures like fixing property down, locking sheds, using security lights, and good fencing can help.

“Other measures such as CCTV could also be explored where higher value property is kept.

“Finally, we would urge anyone who notices anything suspicious to contact us via 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The first incident happened at 12.30am on Monday August 15th as the victim – a 34 year old local woman – was walking along the subway in Carlyle Street in Abertillery near The Pendragon Public House. The victim was approached by a male and sexually assaulted. The male ran off toward Asda.

The second incident occurred at approximately 9.30pm on Tuesday August 16th as the victim – a 19 year old local woman was walking along Arrail Street, Six Bells, Abertillery. The male ran off in the direction of the church.

The offender is described as white, 25-30, five feet ten inches tall, muscular upper body and skinny legs with short spikey blonde hair

The break-ins occurred in Merches Gardens, Mardy Street and Dinas Street, overnight between Sunday, August 28 and Monday, August 29.

Televisions were stolen from the homes in Merches Gardens and Mardy Street, and a set of cream white pearls and DVD player were also stolen from the latter property.

The burglar has gained access via the back lanes then either smashed or forced windows open.

DI Shane Ahmed from Cardiff CID said: “While we don’t wish to alarm the local community, we feel it is important to make residents aware that these incidents have taken place so they can be vigilant and make sure their homes are secure, particularly at night.

“These burglaries are being fully investigated and a number of enquiries are on-going to trace the person responsible.

“Due to the similarities in terms of location, times, and type of offence we believe they are linked and would appeal for anyone for information to contact us.”

A 17 year old female arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs and assault and a 23 year old man arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs have both been released with no further action.

A 32 year old man arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs and sexual assault remains on police bail pending further enquiries.

Officers continue to investigate and anyone with any information is asked to contact Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Four people have already been charged with a number of offences and appeared before Caerphilly Magistrates on Thursday 18th August.

60 year old Jerzy Dubiniec was found dead on Broad Street Pill in the early hours of Saturday 20th August.

Between 3.30am and 4am on 20th August it’s believed four cars passed the scene where the body of Mr Dubiniec was found. Officers have spoken to the drivers of two of the cars but need to trace the other two who could be crucial witnesses to the enquiry. They are urged to come forward to help police with the on going investigation.

Four people (two men, aged 22 and 44 and two women aged 18 and 46) arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless and inconsiderate driving and failure to report a road traffic collision as well as a 19 year old man and a 23 year old woman arrested on suspicion of murder have all been released with no further action.

The 25 year old man will appear before Caerphilly magistrates court this morning (Wednesday August 24th, 2010)

A 21 year old woman and a 22 year old man arrested on suspicion of death by driving without due care and attention and failing to stop at the scene of an accident have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A 19 year old man and a 23 year old woman arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on police bail pending further enquiries; a 23 year old woman arrested on suspicion of murder has been released with no further action.

Four people (two men, aged 22 and 44 and two women aged 18 and 46) arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless and inconsiderate driving and failure to report a road traffic collision were released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A 21 year old woman and a 22 year old man have been arrested on suspicion of death by driving without due care and attention and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. They are in police custody at this time.

Four people have been arrested on suspicion of murder:  a 19 year old man and a 23 year old woman have been released on police bail pending further enquiries; a 23 year old woman has been released with no further action. A 25 year old man (who officers have been granted more time to question) remains in police custody.

Four people (two men, aged 22 and 44 and two women aged 18 and 46) were also arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless and inconsiderate driving and failure to report a road traffic collision and released on police bail pending further enquiries.

All of those arrested are from the Newport area.

Police continue to appeal for anyone with information about the incident or anyone who was in the Broad Street, Pill area between the hours of 2am and 4am on Saturday morning to get in touch as they may have vital information. His body was discovered at approximately 20.15 .We are not treating his death as suspicious. We are not looking for anyone in connection with his death.

Three women were injured when a firearm was discharged in the hairdressers, Carol-Ann’s in Malpas Road, near Newport city centre.

One received a gun shot wound to the leg after the man went into the shop armed with a gun.

Officers recovered a shotgun  from the hairdressers shop.

Two other women sustained minor injuries.

A car which was being sought in connection with the incident has also been located, again in the Newport area.

An intensive search by armed officers was launched after the incident.

A Gwent police spokesman said: “ We are supporting the families of all concerned in this incident and our priority is to ensure they are kept informed as we continue to investigate exactly what happened.

We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from people living and working in the Malpas Road area of the city, whose lives and businesses were considerably disrupted during the day.”

Gwent police are appealing for anyone with information in relation to the incident, and in particular information relating to the shotgun,  to contact us on 101 or via Crimestoppers.

A male had entered the premises with a firearm. Officers have recovered a firearm from the premises.

A female received a gun shot wound to the knee.

Another female has an injury to the neck and another female an injury to the arm. At this time the nature of these injuries has not been confirmed.

None of the injuries are life threatening.

All three adult females are receiving medical treatment and are currently with police officers.

Officers are currently searching for the male involved and enquiries are on going.

They have a team of officers working on the investigation and they are also at the scene.

The victim, a 20 year old female from the Beaufort area, is believed to have walked from Llangynidr Road area in Garnlydan, to the area where the incident occurred although it is not clear which route she took to get there. The area is popular with dog walkers, there are lots of footpaths and cut- throughs and is generally used a recreation ground.

The victim is receiving support from specialist officers. House to house and forensic enquiries are continuing. An incident room has been set up and if anyone has any information they are asked to call Gwent Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111

He has been remanded in custody to appear before Caerphilly magistrates court today, Wednesday 3rd August.

The 18 year old female from the Risca area who was also arrested has been released no further action.

A 22-year-old woman was assaulted near the junction of Thesiger Street and Fitzroy at around 2.50am on Tuesday, November 9 2010.

Detectives investigating the incident have released CCTV images of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the incident.

He is seen on CCTV footage in the area close to where the attack took place. He ran off in the direction of Crwys Road.

DC Mandy Peck said: “Someone must recognise the man in the CCTV and I would appeal for them, or the individual himself, to get in touch to finally give the victim peace of mind.

“This incident may have happened more than eight months ago but we are still focussed on detecting this offence, which was a very frightening experience for the young woman.”

It is the third incident of this kind in the capital this month and although detectives are keeping an open mind, there is a strong possibility that they are linked.

The most recent incident happened around 10.35pm at Costcutter, Whitchurch Road, on Thursday, July 21.

The suspects are described as four black or mixed race men wearing dark clothing.

A male shop worker required around 20 stitches for head injuries inflicted during the incident where a quantity of cash and packets of 10 Lambert and Butler cigarettes were stolen.

They were armed with what appeared to be a black handgun.

Just before leaving the shop one of the robbers removed his mask and said to the worker “Now you can call the police”.

Earlier incidents were at Spar, Clearwater Way, Lakeside, on Wednesday, July 6 at 10.20pm and at Spar, Allensbank Road, on Thursday, July 14 at 9.40pm.

Detective Inspector Shane Ahmed, from Cardiff Bay CID, who is leading the investigation into all three incidents, said: “Due to the similarities of locations, times, descriptions and the nature of the offences there is a strong possibility these incidents are linked but we are keeping an open mind.

“A full investigation is on-going and numerous lines of enquiry are being pursued including CCTV, house to house, intelligence and forensic work.

“We believe the men responsible for these robberies have local connections and urge the public to come forward with information as to their identities.

“Cardiff is a safe city and we will not tolerate violence being used against our shop workers who provide a valued service to their communities.

Detectives are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a silver Ford Focus or Fiesta parked in Canada Road on the night of Thursday, July 21, believed to be a getaway car used by the suspects.

They are also appealing for a potential key witness to come forward. Around the time of the incident, a white man wearing a green T-shirt and knee length shorts was seen on CCTV entering the Panama Tandorri Restaurant on Whitchurch.

The new booklet – A Guide to Dealing with Woodland Crime in Wales – has been published by Forestry Commission Wales in response to rising levels of crime and anti-social activities in woodlands.

It is supported by all four Welsh police forces and Chief Superintendent Gwyn Thomas, the chair of the All Wales Wildlife Crime Enforcement Group, attended the launch.

He said “This guide will help woodland owners and managers to deal with the effects of crime and anti-social behaviour.

“It also identifies steps that can be taken to work with others to address and reduce the problems.”
Woodland crime can include fly-tipping, illegal use of motor vehicles, theft and criminal damage.
The guide clarifies how to deal with such incidents and the procedures for gathering evidence to assist in identifying and, hopefully, prosecuting offenders, along with advice on how woodland owners and managers can work with the police and other agencies.

45 people from a range of organisations with an interest in woodlands and dealing with crime and antisocial activities attended the launch. They included Llais y Goedwig (which represents community woodland groups), the Confederation of Forest Industries (which represents forest businesses and private woodland owners), the fire service, police, Fly Tipping Action Wales and Keep Wales Tidy.

The launch event was hosted by Troserch Woodland Society, which owns Troserch community woodlands.

It ended with a guided walk around the woodland led by Jonathan Price from the Troserch Woodland Society who explained the problems they had experienced and the steps they had taken to deal with them.

The guide was drawn up in association with a number of groups including ConFor, Llais y Goedwig, Coed Cymru, the Wales Forest Business Partnership and Coed Cadw (the Woodland Trust in Wales). E-fits of two men of the suspects have been released as officers continue to investigate the incident which happened on Friday, June 10.

Sometime between 11am and 3pm that day an unknown man attended the home of the 92-year-old in Waterloo Gardens offering to clean her guttering.

A second man turned up and took cash payment after claiming to have completed the work.

She later discovered that three medals – a Royal Artillery Medal, Auxillary Territorial Medal, and War Medal –and cash had been stolen.

Detective Constable Phil Dallyn, from Rumney CID, said: “The lady did not report the burglary until nine days later as she felt annoyed with herself and that her medals had been stolen.

“We sometimes find that distraction burglary victims can feel reluctant to report incidents perhaps like this because they don’t want to create a fuss, or they feel embarrassed or worried about the consequences.

“I would encourage anyone who believes they have been a victim of a distraction burglary to contact police as soon as possible after the incident as this increases our chances of catching the people responsible and ensuring that it doesn’t happen to anyone else.

“Despite the delay in reporting of this particular incident we are doing all we can to bring those responsible to justice.”

A trials bike was also stolen described as a BETA REV4T

Thieves also took a Fox V3 moto helmet of a black, red and white ‘riot’ style design; a pair of white Fox vortex goggles and white Fox bomber gloves. A white Mavic Creek waterproof jacket and a white backpack were also stolen.

The burglary happened in Church Road, Whitchurch, sometime between Thursday, July 14 and Saturday, July 16.

A number of items were stolen including a gold round ring engraved with University of Malmo and a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) Medal.

The medal is attached to a dark pink ribbon which has a blue trim and was in a black case with the letters CBE on the top.

Officers have been carrying out a number of enquiries to identify the burglars and trace the stolen property.

A woman was walking along Emlyn Avenue from Beaufort Road in the direction of Glyn Coed Junior School when a man pushed her to the ground. As she pushed the offender away and stood up the man punched her before running off towards the town centre area.

The victim suffered a black eye.

The offender is described as white, in his early 20’s, clean shaven with black spikey hair. He was wearing a black waterproof type jacket with two zips to the front and the “Superdry” motif on the left shoulder blade area, black jeans and white trainers with a black line running around the side of the sole. The trainers had luminous laces, one yellow and the other orange.

Two homes in Ilfracombe Crescent, Llanrumney, Cardiff, were broken into on Friday, July 10.

Both properties are a short distance apart and both were subject to damage being caused to doors to gain entry.

At the first property the following items were stolen:

Apple Mac laptop
Tag Heur chronograph watch engraved with Barbarians and MasterCard logo.
A set of ‘Three Kings’ collectable coins

Detectives are appealing for assistance in identifying three males who were seen leaving the second property.

One of them had a tattoo on the left side of his neck, under his ear, which appeared to be letters. He is described as white, 5ft 7in to 5ft 10in tall, slim, with dark short hair and aged in his mid-teens.

He was two other males.

One is described as being of mixed race appearance and 6ft 3in tall.

The other was white, slim, in his late teens with short dark hair.

At around 10.20pm last week three men entered the Spar shop in Clearwater Way and stole cash from the till.

The 54-year-old store supervisor was uninjured but badly shaken up by the incident which lasted around a minute.

Detective Sergeant Dafydd Hobbs, from Rumney CID, said: “This was obviously a frightening experience for the gentleman working in the shop and I would like to thank a witness for their prompt actions in dialling 999 and looking after the victim while the emergency services were en route.

“The scene was forensically examined last night and we are recovering CCTV evidence from the shop and surrounding area.”

A quantity of Lambert and Butler cigarettes were also stolen by the men who are described as follows:

• Male one is of Asian appearance, 5ft 11 to 6ft tall, aged in his 20s, wearing yellow gloves, dark glasses, a black hooded top, and a checked scarf thought to be a keffiyeh Arab headdress.
• Male two is 5ft 4ins to 5ft 6ins, tanned, wearing dark glasses and a dark hooded top.
• Male three was wearing a distinctive dark quilted jacket which had a white logo on the chest area and on the back.

DS Hobbs added: “We are appealing for anyone who has information on this incident to contact us and in particular any sightings of these three individuals and information on who they area.

“They caused a lot of distress to the victim for a relatively small amount of cash.

The incident happened at around 11:45 today (Tuesday, July 5th).

The woman, who lives a short distance from where the incident took place, was approached from behind by the male who put his arms around her and pulled her backwards, taking her bag as she lost grip of it.

He made off along Fish Lane towards Trallwn.

Without anyone around to help her, the elderly woman then made the walk to Pontypridd Police Station where she reported the incident.

The suspect has been described as being a white male, between 5ft 8 and 5ft 10, with a thin build. He was wearing a blue anorak which was short to the waist, with a hood that was pulled tight over most of his face.

Detective Sergeant Nick Jenkins said: “This vulnerable lady has been left extremely shocked and saddened by what’s happened to her. I cannot praise enough for her bravery as she had to make her way to the police station with nobody around to help her.

“We are determined to bring this coward to justice, and would urge anyone who may have been in the area who may have noticed anything suspicious to contact Pontypridd Police station via 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Mr Carslake was found dead in a flat on Jeddo Street, Pill on 06 April 2011.

The man was arrested in the Antwerp area of Belgium, and Gwent officers are now in the process of organising his extradition and return to Gwent.

In the early hours of today (Monday, July 4) South Wales Police received information about suspicious behaviour at St Mary’s Church, Kings Road, Canton.

As the call came over the radio officers patrolling the area, following a number of recent burglaries, were just metres away from the church.

A 14-year-old boy and 17-year-old male were arrested at the location. A 19-year-old male was then located on the roof of the church and all three were arrested on suspicion of theft.

A sheet of lead believed to have been removed from the roof was recovered.

Sergeant Jayne Hill said: “Last week we had a number of burglaries in the Pontcanna area which we have been investigating as well as doing increased patrols in uniform and plain clothes.

“When a call came into the control room at 1.30am about individuals possibly on the roof of St Mary’s Church, it was extremely pleasing that officers were in the right place at the right time.

“They were able to arrest three people who remain in custody and locate some lead which it appears had been taken from the roof.

“Metal theft is not a victimless crime and stealing from a church, which provides refuge and comfort to the community, will not be tolerated.”

Operation Lilac is continuing in the Canton and Pontcanna area to prevent and detect burglaries. Residents are reminded to ensure their doors and windows are locked.

Two men aged 22 were arrested in Birchgrove, Cardiff, all suspicion of theft of lead from a house. At around 1.30am officers received a report of a burglary in progress in Heol Powys and attended with a dog unit. Two men were stopped a short distance away and arrested with the help of the dog.

At around 7.30am on Monday, June 20th, four men claiming to be plain clothed police officers duped their way into a property on Albany Street, Mountain Ash and using hand ties, incapacitated three members of the same family whilst they searched the property.

After around 15 minutes, the men – who have been described as being very smartly dressed – left the property with a significant amount of cash and a number of distinct, valuable silver ingots.

The men were then seen leaving the area in a new, dark 5 Series BMW travelling along Albany Street turning right into Arthur Street, probably leaving the immediate area via Llanwonno Road.

Nobody received physical injuries as a result of the incident.

Detective Inspector Phil Camm said: “This was a very rare, isolated incident which was pre-planned by somebody who we believe may well be from the local area.

“The whole family have been left extremely shaken by their ordeal, which lasted for approximately 15 minutes.

“We a have a team of officers investigating this incident which we are taking very seriously.

“We would urge people to be vigilant. The ingots are traceable, so anyone who may have been offered them – especially metal dealers or jewellers – should use caution and let us know.

“Anyone with any information, who may have been in the area at the time and who may have seen four males dressed in suits acting suspiciously, is urged to contact Merthyr CID via 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The incident happened in Kimberley Road, Penylan, Cardiff, at around 2.30pm on Sunday, May 29.

Two boys aged around 14 years old approached the 16-year-old paperboy demanding his silver IPod Touch which has the word “DOM” engraved on the back.

Detective Sergeant Dafydd Hobbs from Roath CID said: “This young man was carrying out a valuable service to the community delivering newspapers when he was threatened by two boys.

“We believe they were in the company of a girl who minutes earlier had asked the victim for the time.

“It is credit to the paperboy that he completed his round but unfortunately this meant that the incident was not reported immediately.

“For this group of young people to target this paper boy is simply cowardly and I would appeal for anyone who has any information on this incident to contact police.”

The girl is described as white, aged 14 to 15 years old, with dark hair tied in a ponytail and she was wearing a grey hooded jumper.

The two boys are both described as 5ft 5in tall, small build, around 14 years old and were possibly wearing gloves.

They were both wearing hooded top – one blue and one black.

The red Ford Escort was stolen from Cowbridge Road East, Canton, on May 20. Two days later the vehicle was sighted at a filling station in Danescourt then found burnt out in Pentrebane.

Officers investigating the incidents are appealing for information regarding the identity of a man seen with the car at the Co-operative petrol station on Llantrisant Road.
