Richard Newton chairman of the Cardiff Wales LGBT Mardi Gras said, “We are truly encouraged by the response so far to the biggest Mardi Gras event to date in Wales. Support has reached us from all walks of life, from politicians to organizations including the public and private sector. People are obviously incorporating the message of tolerance that we want to transfer. Recent homophobic hate crime figures show a 40% rise in the reported cases in South Wales over the past three years which shows that the confidence of gay victims in coming forward. But statistics also show us that trans and homo-phobic hate crime is on the increase in south Wales; and that many have suffered bullying and discrimination in schools and at work. We want to take this opportunity on September 1st as a an opportunity to stop this by create visibility by parading through Cardiff City Center to Coopers field to celebrate tolerance.”

Marcus Collins – X Factor Finalist joins us hot on the success of the release of his top 10 album ‘Seven Nation Army’ Marcus Collins said: ‘I’m really looking forward to performing at Cardiff Wales LGBT Mardi Gras Festival this summer. As a singer it’s a great privilege to be asked to take part in such an event. I hope that people come from far and wide to celebrate their diversity and make Cardiff come alive on a very special day”

Making what’s bound to be a popular return to Cardiff – Ruth Lorenzo  – joins the main stage line up. Following her time in the X Factor live shows, Ruth is now an established live artist.

Mardi Gras Parade – This year Cardiff LGBT Mardi Gras is holding Wales the first ever Mardi Gras Parade. Politicians, businesses and individuals will all be parading on the morning of 1st September 2012 as the colourful and inspiring spectacle highlights LGBT rights in Wales. The parade moves off from the assembly point on Dumballs Road at 11.00am on September 1st through St Mary Street and High Street prior to arriving at Cooper’s Field in time for the main Mardi Gras event.

The Official Mardi Gras After Party (Over18’s only)- For the first time Cardiff Mardi Gras are hosting their own official after-party. The official Cardiff Mardi Gras after-party will be held in the undercover dance arena on Cooper’s Field on September 1st 2012 and features one of the world’s largest, most respected, awarded and successful club nights, The SuperMartXé World Tour, presenting The Freemasons, featuring Abel the Kid and Sandra Criado. This will be a Wales debut for SuperMartXé as part of their World tour (other Cities include: Madrid, Ibiza, Tel Aviv, Rio de Janeiro).

Arts Festival – Cardiff-Wales LGBT Mardi Gras is holding a week long Arts Festival celebrating the best of Cardiff’s vibrant arts scene in the run-up to the main Mardi Gras event at Coopers Field on Saturday September 1st.

The Admiral Cabaret Garden – highlighting the best in cabaret, drag and unsigned acts from the local area.

Youth Zone – For the third year running Cardiff Mardi Gras will host a Youth and Family Zone at the Coopers Field event on September 1st 2012. The Youth and Family Zone is the first of its kind at a Mardi Gras or Pride Event. Whilst the Cardiff Wales LGBT Mardi Gras aims to engage people in a fun way, it is an important element in a wider strategy to combat hate crime and to encourage and respect diversity.

Community and Markets – giving the opportunity to shop from a range of traders, and explore the public and voluntary sector agencies that seek to support and work with the LGBT community.

Also present in the field will be the Mardi Gras Funfair, and a range of bars and catering.

Dance Arena will be the biggest ever! Highlighting some of the best local and national DJ talent. During the day the 2,000 capacity Dance Arena will be hosted by Decadance, the well established Cardiff clubbing brand that hosts its parties in the capital at Club X since 2008. Decadance are delighted to host the Cardiff Mardi Gras Dance Arena and will bring their very unique music to clubbers, through resident DJ’s Ant Nichols, Mark Anthony, Nigel Trego and Dan Stone.

The Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK’s largest HIV and sexual health charity, held the event on 4th July to “Thank Terry”, and mark 30 years since Welsh-born Terry Higgins was the first person in the UK publicly identified to have died with AIDS. Mrs Chapman said “I have long been a supporter of the Terrence Higgins Trust, as they do excellent work and I am proud to be able to join in their celebrations and ‘Thank Terry’ for the positive legacy he has left for the country’s sexual health”.

Originally from Haverfordwest, Terry Higgins died of an AIDS-related illness on 4th July 1982, aged 37 years old. That same year, three of his closest friends founded the Terrence Higgins Trust, using Terry’s name in the hope of humanising and personalising AIDS in a very public way. The charity, which first began working in Wales in June 2003 following a merger with Cardiff AIDS Helpline, now runs a range of sexual health services across Wales.

Mrs Chapman said: “We know that advances in medicine mean that a prognosis of HIV is different now to what it was 30 years ago. But there are many people in Wales who don’t get tested, as they think HIV doesn’t affect them and we must tackle this stigma”.

Steve Jones, National Director of Terrence Higgins Trust Cymru, said: “In 2012, it really is within our grasp to slash HIV rates. But that will require everyone’s commitment if it is to become a reality. It is vital that we place renewed emphasis on HIV prevention, awareness and services across Wales.”

Welsh Education Minister Leighton Andrews confirmed last night that he would be launching an investigation after the Catholic Education Service wrote to its schools urging them to support an online petition opposing equal marriage.

“We are pleased that the Minister has taken such swift action on this potential safeguarding issue” said Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru “if any school in Wales has been involved in promoting this it would be a shocking breach of their duty of care.  No school, faith or otherwise, should be involved in such a live political issue, particularly in a way that demeans gay pupils.”

Dr Barry Morgan said he was concerned about the welfare of gay people whom he feared could feel uncomfortable and unwelcome in churches over the coming months as Government proposals for same-sex marriage are debated nationally.

In his presidential address to members of the Church in Wales’ Governing Body in Llandudno, the Archbishop said same-sex relationships was a moral issue facing the Church and the world, on which there was no single Christian opinion. His concern, however, was that the Church should offer gay people pastoral care and support.

Dr Morgan said, “The Government’s consultation on civil marriage raises a whole host of theological questions for the church.  My concern at the moment is that in any discussion which might ensue on this, gay people may once more gain the impression that the church is uncaring and unsympathetic.  Things could be said in the coming months which I think could seriously damage people pastorally so it is that pastoral issue that I want to address.”

The Archbishop said that while the Bishops of the Church in Wales abided by the Christian doctrine of marriage as the union of one man with one woman freely entered into for life, they agreed that “all life-long committed relationships deserved the welcome, pastoral care and support of the Church and they were committed to further listening, prayerful reflection and discernment regarding same-sex relationships”.

But he warned, “Gays and lesbians claim they are still treated as second-class citizens, tolerated at best and vilified at worst….  Very often homosexuality is talked about as if real people were not involved; and gays and lesbians complain of being talked about rather than talked to in Church.”

He added, “The real question is, how do we hold together faithfulness to Scripture and tradition with the wider New Testament call to love our neighbour?  If the moral aim of the gospel is to encourage love of neighbour, how can that happen when people are made to feel unwanted, unloved, and sinful?  How is the gospel good news for homosexuals?”

Dr Barry Morgan said the Church would not be able to ignore the new legislation on civil marriage proposed by the Government, despite the fact that the legislation would not allow gay couples to marry in church. He called on the Church to discuss how it would respond.

He said, “If the legislation to allow civil marriage is passed, I cannot see how we as a church, will be able to ignore the legality of the status of such partnerships and we ought not to want to do so.

“The question then as now is, will the church protect and support pastorally, faithful, stable, lifelong relationships of whatever kind in order to encourage human values such as love and fidelity and recognise the need in Christian people for some public religious support for these. As Helen says in the novel “Nightwatch” by Sarah Walters – a novel written in 1947, ‘what could she do to say to the world that Julia was hers?’  She could have gone on to ask ‘what can the church do to show that this relationship is not simply something between my partner and I but that somehow God is in our midst as well and longs for our wellbeing?’ It is a discussion we need to have.”

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans History Month Cymru takes place every year in February and celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community.

During the storytelling session, five people will give a 10 minute talk about their experiences.

One story comes from Sandy Collins, whose life and success as a post-op transsexual woman has taken her from growing up in Newport to becoming a showgirl in the USA. Now back living in Cardiff, Sandy tells us about her amazing journey.

Another story will come from LGBT Excellence Centre Wales Business Manager Robert Hutton, who will talk about coming out in Cardiff in the early 1980s, his feelings of isolation and discovering the city’s pubs and clubs while being introduced to the gay scene as a teenager.

LGBT History Month Cymru was setup by the LGBT Excellence Centre Wales in 2011 as part of their work to bring together Welsh organisations, groups and individuals to record and celebrate a history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Wales.

Talking Heads will take place in the Learning Suite On Tuesday 28, February at The Cardiff Story, doors open at 7pm with the first stories set to start at 7.15pm,

The event is not ticketed, but seats will be allocated on a first come basis.

Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “There is no better place to tell a story than at the aptly named Cardiff Story. Each speaker will provide a fascinating insight into their lives and speak about their various experiences.

“The museum will provide a superb backdrop to these interesting and varied stories.

“Cardiff Council actively supports the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender community and this event is an excellent way of raising equality awareness and celebrating the achievements of individuals.”

Jane Hutt has announced that a framework for action will be created to   tackle all forms of hate crime including disability-related harassment, as well as harassment based on race, religion,sexual orientation and against  transgender people.  It will be underpinned by strong consultation and clear evidence.

The approach will be supported by realistic and deliverable plans which will be deeply rooted in the Welsh Government working closely with their partners.

Minister Jane Hutt said:

“Incidents of hate crime are shocking and unacceptable. I am committed to the Welsh Government taking a strong lead in this area.

“We all have a duty to protect those who are most vulnerable to harassment in society and to ensure that disabled people and those with long term health conditions are able to live a life without fear.

“I think that there is an excellent opportunity under the new Welsh specific equality duties to work closely with public sector organisations to tackle and respond to these particular issues.

“I want to ensure that we live in a society where hate crime is not tolerated, so that people in Wales feel free to live within safe and vibrant communities.”

A commitment to tackling hate crime is made in the Welsh Government’s Programme for Government, and these plans have been previewed in a response to the Communities, Equality and Local Government Committee’s inquiry into disability harassment in Wales.

Ms Hutt has also emphasised that she is committed to building on recent research into hate crime, and will commission work to examine the perpetrators of hate crime and their motives in the very near future.

The Communities, Equalities and Local Government Committee report on Disability Related Harassment in Wales will be discussed in the National Assembly for Wales on Wednesday 22nd February 2012.

With tougher criteria and the number of entrants to the 2012 Index up by nearly  4% from last year – from 350 to 363 – Cardiff Council surpassed some stiff competition from a range of employers from across Britain to be ranked fifty-sixth; which also meant it came in the Top 10 of Welsh Employers listed.

Over recent years, Cardiff Council has established a number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) initiatives, which has helped the authority to champion its equality causes and provide additional support, advice and guidance to its employees and citizens.

This includes the Council’s LGBT Employee Network, which acts as a point of support for LGBT employees amongst the authority’s 16,000 strong workforce, and has recently been acknowledged by Stonewall as one of its 2012 Star Performer Network Groups – a scheme designed by the charity to showcase excellence in employee networks. And to help combat homophobia in schools, two year’s ago Cardiff’s Youth Services established the “Loud and Proud” Youth Provision, which has given young LGBT people a platform to raise awareness of the need for all young people to live in dignity.

Council Leader, Cllr Rodney Berman, said: “As the largest public sector employer in Wales with a workforce providing services to the country’s most culturally diverse city, it seems only natural that we want to invest in our staff by embedding an organisational culture of acceptance and openness to different equality issues.

“The Council operates a no tolerance policy to all kinds of discrimination, including homophobia, which is supported by a range of measures and a working ethos that we have fostered over the years to ensure that everyone feels welcome and valued.”

“Along with our commitment to our workforce, the Council also plays an active role in offering   the lesbian, gay and bisexual community of Cardiff support. In 2011 we were involved with a number of key events including LGBT History Month and our continued support to the Cardiff Mardi Gras, to ensure it remains a key event in the city’s calendar.

Cllr Judith Woodman, Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council and its Executive Equalities Champion, added: “There is no place for narrow-mindedness in our organisation and eradicating inequalities from the workplace has been a personal venture of mine for some time.

“As evidenced by our presence in Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers list, Cardiff Council is committed to fairness and promoting equal opportunities, regardless of someone’s age, gender, race, religion, disability, parental responsibilities and of course sexual orientation.“

At an Awards Ceremony held in London on Wednesday 11 January 2012, it was announced that South Wales Police has been placed 23rd in the ‘Top 100 Employers in Britain’ and 4th in Wales for Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index 2012.

The Index measures how employers treat their staff regardless of their sexual orientation so that everyone is treated equally. It also measures how well diversity is promoted and accepted within the workplace.

Mr Mark Milton, Strategic Director of HR at South Wales Police, said,

“The news of our success in reaching 23rd in this prestigious index is something South Wales Police values greatly. An increase of 45 places on our previous result is recognition of the great effort put in by everybody in the organisation to demonstrate our understanding of our Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual community and staff.

“It is important to us that all of our staff feel they can be themselves at work and, in doing so, are better able to excel in serving the public.

“We will still continue to strive for a more diverse workforce at all ranks and levels to enable us to be the best at understanding and responding to the communities we serve.”

The charity Stonewall will be holding a Welsh Awards ceremony next week to celebrate the ‘Top 12 Employers in Wales’.

Ofsted’s new framework, which will be launched in January 2012, includes specific reference to behaviour and will look at how schools tackle the issue of homophobic bullying. The School Champions programme will help schools prepare for the new framework and, as well as offering advice and practical support on preventing and tackling homophobic bullying, will give schools access to a huge range of resources created by Stonewall to help ensure they have the right approaches in place.

Alastair Tallon, Stonewall’s Education Director, said: ‘Being a member of the School Champions programme will be an effective way for schools to meet the new Ofsted criteria. A wide range of schools have already signed up to the programme including primary schools and pupil referral units.’

The School Champions programme was launched as part of an event, hosted by Birmingham City Council, to discuss the importance of effective leadership in tackling homophobic bullying.

Recent YouGov polling for Stonewall showed that nine in ten secondary school staff and more than two in five primary school staff say children and young people, regardless of their sexual orientation, experience homophobic bullying, name calling or harassment in their schools. Yet, nine in ten secondary and primary school staff have never received any specific training on how to prevent and respond to homophobic bullying.

A Deputy Headteacher from a South East London Primary School said: ‘Working alongside Stonewall has enabled me as a school leader to be pro-active in tackling the sometimes complex issues around homophobic bullying and gender stereotyping. Staff at all levels now feel fully supported and confident in tackling homophobic bullying and the use of homophobic language.’

Stonewall also launched the Effective School Leadership guide, supported by National College for School Leadership, at the seminar.

Ninety five per cent of secondary school teachers, recently polled by YouGov for Stonewall, reported hearing the phrases ‘you’re so gay’ or ‘that’s so gay’ in their schools. And nine in ten said that children and young people, regardless of their sexual orientation, experience homophobic bullying, name calling or harassment.

This Anti-Bullying Week several high-profile supporters have joined Stonewall’s Education for All campaign, which tackles homophobic bullying in schools. Household names including Coronation Street star and Guardian columnist Charlie Condou and broadcaster and journalist Vanessa Feltz have spoken out about the urgent need to tackle this issue.

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall’s Chief Executive, said: ‘Anti-Bullying Week is a powerful opportunity to raise awareness of the need to tackle homophobic bullying and language in our schools. No child or young person should be prevented from fulfilling their potential because of homophobic bullying.’

There are many ways to get involved in Stonewall’s work this Anti-Bullying Week and beyond. Sixty three per cent of secondary teachers say homophobic bullying has a negative impact on pupils’ school work, which can ultimately lead to them missing out on career and development opportunities.

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive, said: ‘This pioneering research confirms what many lesbian, gay and bisexual people know anecdotally – hundreds of thousands are growing older lacking family and support structures that straight people frequently take for granted, often because they have been estranged from their families. We’re also facing a care time bomb of institutional ignorance about how to serve our community properly.’

The research demonstrates that older gay and bisexual men are around three times more likely to be single than heterosexual men. And while almost nine in ten heterosexual older people have children who may offer care and support in later life, this figure is just over a quarter of gay and bisexual men and just under a half of lesbian and bisexual women.

Lesbian, gay and bisexual people are also half as likely to regularly see members of their biological family. Less than a quarter see family members at least once a week, compared with more than half of heterosexual people.

This reduced network of support – compared to their heterosexual peers – means older lesbian, gay and bisexual people are more likely to rely on formal social care. However, while they were nearly twice as likely to rely on GP and social services than heterosexual people, three in five are not confident that social care services will meet their needs.

Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual People in Later Life contains wide-ranging recommendations for bodies such as the Department of Health and the Care Quality Commission as well as for frontline services.

‘Gay people make a £40bn contribution every year to the cost of our public services,’ said Ben Summerskill. ‘Quite rightly, they want the services they pay for to meet their needs.’

Stonewall today welcomed the Department of Health’s decision to end the lifetime ban on gay men donating blood as a ‘step in the right direction’. However, the charity expressed concern that gay men engaged in low-risk sexual activity are still to be excluded from giving blood while heterosexuals engaged in higher risk activity will not.

‘Safety must remain paramount. However at a time of national shortages in blood, everyone who can give blood at no risk to recipients should be able to donate,’ said Stonewall Cymru Director Andrew White. ‘To retain a blanket ban on any man who has had sex with another man in the last year, even if he has only had oral sex, remains disproportionate on the basis of available evidence.’

‘All those who donate blood should be asked about their sexual behaviour and assessed appropriately. However under the new rules, a gay man in a monogamous relationship who has only had oral sex will still automatically be unable to give blood but a heterosexual man who has had multiple partners and not worn a condom will not be questioned about his behaviour, or even then, excluded.’

In countries such as Italy and Spain, the automatic ban on gay men giving blood has already been lifted. The Antony Nolan Trust lifted its blanket exclusion on gay men donating bone marrow in 2008.

‘We recognise this move as a step in the right direction,’ said Ben Summerskill, ‘and we welcome undertakings from the National Blood Service that they will in future treat gay people with greater courtesy than they’ve often done in the past. We also welcome the fact that those HIV charities which doggedly supported the ban until recently have revised their position. However, Stonewall will continue to push for a donation system based on the real risks a potential donor poses. People wanting to donate blood should be asked similar questions – irrespective of their sexual orientation – that accurately assess their level of risk of infection. Sadly, the proposed new system will still fail to do this.’

They are a shadowy bunch, hard to spot at first. Give-away signs are attention to grooming and approaches made to our vulnerable young people. That’s right dear reader – I’m talking about extreme evangelical Christians.

Tomorrow will see a group of them (well, to be honest, last year I only spotted one) standing outside the entrance to the Cardiff Mardi Gras spouting their usual bile and hatred.

Christian Voice says:

“The annual Cardiff ‘Gay Mardi Gras’ is taking place in Bute Park.  It largely consists of a mixture of politically-correct and indecent stalls with a stage on which some lack-lustre acts will perform. There will be a Christian Voice outreach outside, which we call an evangelistic prophetic witness: standing up against this ungodly event and at the same time using it as a spring board for evangelism.”

They continue:

“Apart from those suffering from same-sex attraction, quite a few young heterosexual young people, mainly girls, come to the Mardi Gras in the misguided notion that it is cool and harmless.”

What nonsense. The author of their article went on to say:

“In 2006, this writer was arrested, thrown in the clink for four hours and charged with a public order offence by South Wales Police.  There was massive publicity, SWP were sued for wrongful arrest, false imprisonment and malicious prosecution and they settled out of court.  An officer we met at the event in 2007 said SWP learnt their lesson after that.”

The organiser’s of the Cardiff Mardi Gras have said:

“Christian Voice the religious group, have once again indicated that they will be protesting outside the Mardi Gras site – guys – please treat this protest peacefully – we urge you to walk past and just ignore it……rise above it and don’t react.”

Well I’m sorry – That’s not good enough. South Wales Police look too scared to do anything and the organisers are telling us to ignore them.

Stephen, who would appear to be one of the organisers of the Christian Voice protest, has commented:

“It is seedy because homosexuality is corrupt and corrupting. It is the physical act of sodomy which is condemned in Holy Scripture and Christianity has never accepted ‘same sex relations’. We don’t hate homosexuals at all – although those campaigning for sexual access to children and imposing their warped views on others do try our patience somewhat. The world may change; it changed in Germany in the last century when a largely homosexual gang set up the Nazi Party and a majority elected them into power and allowed them to send Jews to the gas chambers.”

He really does seem to have an unhealthy interest in sodomy.

I hope everyone else has a great day. And, by the way Stephen, I share my bed with a cat but not in the biblical way. As for being ‘politically-correct’ I was brought up as a Conservative and in the Anglican tradition. Perhaps you should go and prophetilise to the EDL as they seem to like your kind of rabid rhetoric.

The main event will feature a full line-up of local and national performers on the main stage, as well as the Admiral Cabaret Garden, showcasing some of the best cabaret acts around, and the Gaydar Dance Arena. As usual there will be a market area, fairground, bars and catering in addition to the development of the Youth Zone which debuted in 2010.

In the lead up to the Main Event on September 3rd, the first ever Cardiff Mardi Gras Arts Festival will take place across the city, showcasing the best that Cardiff’s arts scene has to offer. Events include a performance by NoFit State Circus, solo show Stevenage at Chapter Arts Centre, a cabaret night at St David’s Hall, Jazz & Cocktails at Cardiff Central Library and a Welsh-language gig featuring Clinigol and Nia Medi at Clwb Ifor Bach.

The Main Event will once again take place in a fenced-off area, with no alcohol to be brought onto the site, for everyone’s safety and to ensure that the Mardi Gras remains open and accessible to all. It is free to attend the Main Event but donations are welcomed as they help to meet the costs of staging the event.

It has been revealed that the main stage line-up will include the South Wales Gay Men’s Chorus, Eurovision sensation Scooch performing a Glee-inspired set, 80s pop icon Hazell Dean, favourites of the LGBT rock scene Kenelis, X Factor finalist Sean Rumsey, Welsh language rockers Clinigol and many more.

Councillor Nigel Howells, Cardiff Council’s Executive Member for sport Culture and Leisure, said: “The Cardiff Mardi Gras is a great event that celebrates diversity in a city that prides itself on promoting equality for all. As a Council we have been proud to be recognized for our commitment to the LGBT community and have reached the top 50 of the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, which lists Britain’s top 100 employers for LGBT staff. The Council also plays an active role in offering support to the LGBT community of Cardiff, including providing support to the Cardiff Mardi Gras”

Mark Williams, Project Manager Anti-hate Crime, Safer Wales says: “’Report Hate’ Safer Wales campaign has been built in partnership with the Welsh police forces for the community. The leaflets and posters will be used by community members, including those with some visual impairment.”

Mark went on to say that research shows that only one in four cases of homophobic and racist hate crime, and only one in ten cases of disability related hate crime are reported. “With this sponsorship we will be able to reach more people and make a difference to encourage victims to come forward.”

Gwyn Thomas, Chief Superintendent, Dyfed Powys Police says: “We have worked with Safer Wales for many years and are strong supporters of the Report Hate campaign. Providing a secure and confidential reporting system forms an integral part of our community initiatives.”

Euros Evans, chief technology officer at Airwave went on to say that “We are proud to support a number of initiatives which are designed to give something back to the wider community. Mardi Gras organisers have planned a week filled with fun events in the lead up to the main party at Coopers Field on September 3.

Central Library will host a number of Mardi Gras events, including special craft workshops taught by the Makers Guild in Wales, which will take place on August 27. Participants will have a chance to be creative with felt making and jewellery.

A jazz and cocktails evening is planned for August 31 and the library will be filled with music from artists including, The Butler in the Billiard room, Jenny Bradley’s Occasional Brass Ensemble and CjmK.

Finally on the eve of the Mardi Gras on Friday September 2 the library will host ‘Literature doesn’t have to be boring! ’workshops.

Chris Dye Stonewall’s Education Officer, said: ‘As lesbian, gay and bisexual students collect their results and look towards the next step in their education, they will want to know they’re applying for a university that will give them the best value for money and will treat them with respect. Since its launch in July, 8,000 people have already benefitted from the 2012 edition of Gay by Degree, which helps LGB students compare how gay-friendly their university choices are. It has also been used by many universities to measure and improve their provision for LGB students.’

Mark Palmer-Edgecumbe, Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Google, said: ‘Google are delighted to support Stonewall’s University Guide 2012. Here at Google we believe that every young person, regardless of their sexual orientation, deserves the best start in life and the opportunity to embark on any career they wish to. Gay By Degree – published online at www.gaybydegree.org.uk – measures each UK university against 10 criteria. These include whether there is a student lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) Society, whether tailored LGB careers advice is offered, whether the university supports its LGB staff and whether policies and practices that counter homophobic bullying and specific events for gay students are in place. New for 2012 is a ‘career spotlight’ section, featuring profiles of 12 recent LGB graduates each working in different sectors.

Nationwide has been a member of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme, Britain’s good practice employers’ forum on sexual orientation, since May 2004. Robin Bailey, Diversity and Equality of Opportunities Committee Chair at Nationwide, said: ‘Stonewall does excellent work promoting inclusivity and equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff, and Nationwide is delighted to support an awards ceremony that celebrates people who have made such a positive impact promoting that cause.

‘Our support of this year’s Awards demonstrates our continuing commitment to our LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) staff. We are now working with Stonewall to re-energise our own Employee Network Group, helping us to provide a supportive working culture and environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.’

Winners of last year’s Awards included rugby player Gareth Thomas (Hero of the Year) Coronation Street (Broadcaster of the Year) and Martina Navratilova (Sports Award). Tickets will be on sale in late August and nominees will be announced in October.

Radyr Comprehensive School’s Domino Project has been nationally recognised in the Speaker’s School Council Awards for their work aimed at changing people’s perceptions and raising awareness of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues in schools and beyond.

With a motto of ‘I Am What I Am’, the project seeks to break down barriers and support young people whatever their sexuality. The school council members have been involved in presenting their ideas to youth conferences and via short videos on You Tube, including an interview with Leader of Cardiff Council, Rodney Berman, who adds his support to the campaign.

Over 800 school councils registered to enter the awards scheme with an inspiring and worthwhile array of activities. The judging panel, which included the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon John Bercow MP; Sir Keith Ajegbo, citizenship specialist and author of Diversity and Citizenship Curriculum Review; Jo Swinson MP (East Dunbartonshire), Tom O’Leary, Head of Education and Public Engagement at Houses of Parliament and Dr Emma- Jane (Edge) Watchorn, Parliament’s Education Service Manager as well as a selection of school pupils, were incredibly impressed by the project and all that the school council has achieved.

Six members of the Radyr school council have now been invited to represent the school at an awards day at the Houses of Parliament on Thursday, June 30 when the Cardiff students will have a chance to meet other successful school councils and share their ideas.

There will also be the opportunity to quiz a panel of special guests about the issues and themes of the winning projects and a tour of the Houses of Parliament.

Leader of Cardiff Council, Rodney Berman, said: “I’m delighted that Radyr Comprehensive’s school council has been recognised in such a prestigious award scheme. I was more than happy to lend my support to their campaign and hope that the project continues to grow and succeed.”

Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “There is a great deal of excellent work going on in Cardiff schools to promote equality and tackle bullying.
I’m really pleased to see young people prepared to stand up and make a stand for their peers. The Domino Project is a very worthwhile campaign and this award is well-deserved.”

Nia Morgan, School Council link teacher at Radyr Comprehensive, said: “I am extremely proud of the students and what they have achieved within our school and the wider community. I hope that the Domino Project will go from strength to strength and that other schools will be inspired by the work and participate.”

IDAHO aims to encourage people to demand improvements in society to create and sustain a positive quality of life for LGBT communities across the world.

A poster campaign has also been launched in force in support of the day.

Superintendent Liane Bartlett of Communities and Partnerships said: “Here at South Wales Police, our values are to be proud, professional and positive. We can all make a difference and contribute to ensuring that improvements are made to the quality of life of LGBT people within our workplace and communities.”

IDAHO calls for respect and dignity for lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgender people and is an opportunity for individuals and organisations to stand up against homophobia.  The event first began in 2004 and is now celebrated across the world.

Ahead of the day, on Monday, May 16, Executive Member for Housing, Communities and Social Justice, Cllr Judith Woodman and Cardiff Council Chief Executive Jon House raised a rainbow flag at County Hall.

Rainbow flags are a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pride.

Executive Member for Housing, Communities and Social Justice, Cllr Judith Woodman, said: “I am pleased that once again we will be flying rainbow flags at City Hall, County Hall and the Castle to mark IDAHO. This simple act shows our support for the lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgender community.

This year representatives from public services are being asked to report back outcomes on how they have developed in response to the needs of LGB people.  There will be four events across Wales, the first of these will be hosted by Stonewall Cymru Diversity Champions Mid & West Wales Fire and Rescue Service on June 14th

Andrew White Stonewall Cymru’s Director said: “many Welsh lesbian, gay and bisexual people will have a very different experience of public services, not always positive.  These events are an opportunity for people to have their voices heard directly and for service providers to report to local LGB people on their work.”

He added “we’re pleased to be able to offer this opportunity, and are really looking forward to hearing what people have to say”

The event takes place on Sunday 28th August at the Norwegian Church Arts Centre, Cardiff Bay between 13:00 and 15:00.

The Cardiff Mardi Gras Main Event will be held on Saturday 3rd September in Cooper’s Field, Cardiff with an exciting programme of events in the week leading up to Mardi Gras.

This is an important opportunity for voters to question candidates on equality ahead of the Assembly elections on May 5th.

Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru said “We are delighted that all four main political parties are taking part in this debate. It is an important part of our democracy to be able to hold candidates to account.”

Vaughan Roderick, BBC Wales Welsh Affairs Editor will chair the cross-party debate. He said “In the forty years since Leo Abse and Roy Jenkins pioneered gay emancipation huge strides have been taken towards LGB equality culminating in the 2010 Equality Act. Serious issues still confront the LGB community though including homophobic bullying in schools, HIV/AIDS and the needs of the first “out” generation who are approaching old age. These hustings will allow members of the LGB community to test whether Welsh politicians are prepared to back up fine word with actions”

Liberal Democrat candidate Elgan Morgan said “The Welsh Liberal Democrats want everyone to have an equal stake in the better Wales which we are trying to create. I, and the Party, will respect diversity and empower all individuals. The people of Wales should not lose out on grounds of age, gender, disability, religion, race or sexual orientation. The current economic climate and financial difficulties are not an excuse to let equality slip. Equality needs to be promoted whatever the circumstances.”

Huw Lewis candidate for Welsh Labour said that his party “Is committed to improving services and opportunities for all lesbian, gay and bisexual people, including those who continue to experience discrimination within their communities. Our new public sector duties will provide the basis for securing equality in the provision of public services – making sure that services meet the needs of LGB people in Wales. Working in close partnership with organisations such as Stonewall, Labour has acted in Government – at the Assembly and UK level – to tackle homophobia and secure equal treatment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in so many areas. These Stonewall Cymru hustings provide a welcome opportunity for us to further this partnership so that, together, we can address the issues which really matter to LGB people in Wales.”

Plaid Cymru’s Leanne Wood said: “Plaid believes that everyone should be able to participate fully in society and those discriminatory barriers which prevent participation need to be broken down.  Despite efforts by Stonewall Cymru and others to educate, inform and persuade and despite legislation and the changing of many people’s attitudes, far too many people are afraid of coming out, far too many people experience homophobic bullying and harassment and for far too many people, this stops them from fully participating in society.

She added “Plaid Cymru is working to build a Wales free of discrimination in all of its forms; a Wales based on the principles of fairness and equality and the full participation of all its citizens.  Dialogue and debate is crucial if homophobic attitudes are to be stamped out and that is why I am grateful to Stonewall Cymru for their political activity throughout the year as well as for organising this hustings event.”

Ben Gray, candidate for the Welsh Conservatives, said “Welsh Conservatives are committed to a Wales that is equal for all. Bullying, discrimination and bias have no place in our country and we must continue to work towards equal treatment in all our communities. Events like the Cardiff Mardi Gras need continued support and a zero tolerance policy on hate crimes and bullying is the only way forward. Any barriers standing in the way of success in these areas must be broken down forever. It gives me great pleasure to be able to participate in these hustings and make clear our intention to work with Stonewall Cymru and others, in order to put equality at the top of the Assembly agenda.”

Vaughan Roderick, BBC Wales political presenter and Welsh language blogger, will host a cross-party debate with representatives from the Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat and Plaid Cymru parties focusing on how their policies for the next Assembly will affect lesbian, gay and bisexual people.

Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru said “With lesbian, gay and bisexual people representing over 6% of the electorate in Wales and issues such as homophobic bullying being endemic in Welsh schools, the Assembly elections are an important opportunity to ensure that sexual orientation issues are included in Assembly policies.”

He added “Nearly two thirds of young lesbian, gay and bisexual people experience homophobic bullying in our schools yet two thirds of secondary school staff do not always respond to such bullying. It is vital that lesbian, gay and bisexual people across Wales have the opportunity to find out what candidates would do to ensure they are included and supported at home, at school and at work.”

This hustings event will give voters to the opportunity to hear how each party has responded to Stonewall Cymru’s election manifesto in the areas of education, healthcare, public services, hate crime and representation.

The survey will cover a range of issues including mental health, diet and general fitness, long-term health conditions and illnesses like heart disease and cancer, and experiences of using health services.

Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru, said: ‘We know quite a lot about the sexual health of gay and bisexual men, but very, very little is known about their wider health needs. This is an opportunity for gay and bisexual men to have their say, contributing to the biggest ever health survey of its kind.’

The research follows Stonewall’s ground-breaking study into the health needs of lesbian and bisexual women, Prescription for Change, which surveyed over 6,000 women.

The Silent Auction – which supports Stonewall’s ongoing work to improve lesbian, gay and bisexual equality in Britain – is open to bids from everyone.

Or if food and drink are more to your taste there are two special lots; a wine tasting for up to twelve people in the comfort of your own home with France’s first female Master of Wine, Isabelle Legeron. The second is an incredible six-course tasting dinner for six people in your very own kitchen, cooked by the UBS Executive Chef. I have been on many in the uk and Cardiff is without a doubt right at the top of great places to visit. There are also many hotels near the scene offering accommodation to suit all budgets.

Wow Bar has to be the crown of the gay scene. A vibrant colourful bar, attracting a mixed and very friendly crowd, from all aspects of life.  Entertainment supplied most nights by some of the city’s leading performers, drags artist Bella Endez and the Lady GA GA Experience to name but a few of the regular stars who perform there.

Club X – This city centre gay venue has been at the heart of Cardiff’s clubbing experience for many years. Some may say it’s an institution! Offering the gay scene something that no other venue has – A real underground environment with a music policy to match.

The Golden Cross

Although not an exclusive gay venue, this is another popular attraction on the Cardiff scene. This is the sister venue to Exit Bar. Often referred to as ‘the swishiest Gay bar outside London’, it opened its doors at the beginning of 2005.

The five officers – who are all LGB&T liaison officers – have been filmed talking about their own personal experiences, as well as outlining the LGB&T Liaison Officer service for victims of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic hate crime. The overall aim of the short film is to give a positive message to young LGB&T people who may be suffering bullying or hate crime, and to reassure them that the police will be there to support them. The film is to be used as a wider Stonewall Cymru viral campaign.

The film was shown for the first time at an event at University of Wales, Newport, Caerleon Campus, as part of LGB&T History month. Gwent Police attended to talk to young people as well as representatives from partner agencies including Victim Support, Gwent Crown Prosecution Service, and THT (Terence Higgins Trust).

The film, which can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgeg-YthHwA  will  be used to promote the LGB&T Liaison Officer service to communities across Gwent, as well as highlighting the impact of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying within schools.

In December 2010, Gwent Police were the first Welsh police force to introduce LGB&T Liaison Officers. Fourteen officers and staff in total received specialist training to provide victims of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic hate crime with specialist support and advice.

Nationally, these types of hate crimes are under reported, and it is hoped that the Liaison Officers will help victims to have the confidence to approach the police when an incident has happened. The officers provide victims and witnesses with reassurance that they are being supported by a member of Gwent Police that has received specialist training, and can often relate on a personal level to some of the issues they might be experiencing. LGB&T Liaison Officers are able to give information, support and advice to victims and witnesses of crimes and incidents; to signpost to other support services; to give support and advice to officers dealing with homophobic, biphobic and transphobic incidents; to promote understanding amongst colleagues about the needs of local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities and to offer guidance and advice to police officers and staff.

Deputy Chief Constable Jeff Farrar, Gwent Police said:

“We are proud to be the first force in Wales to introduce LGB&T liaison officers and since the service was introduced our officers have dealt with eight cases, many of which are still receiving ongoing support and advice as the investigative process continues. The feedback we have had from members of the public has been very positive indeed. The film is another way we hope to reach out to young people who are perhaps experiencing feelings of isolation. We really want them to know that it does get better today and we can make it happen.”

Tina Sparkle will be spreading her stardust on an irreverent new game show on S4C which will nominate a new patron saint for Wales.

She will be the first ever drag queen to star on the Welsh language channel.

The show will be broadcast just after a ground-breaking documentary about the ultimate Welsh hero, Owain Glyndwr.

Tina  – a “lot more refined and sparkly” than Lily Savage – will be sitting on her throne compiling a new Welsh dictionary in Dot Cym, a half hour game show which promotes Wales and the Welsh, but has a good laugh at the same time.

The show, which will be chaired by former football commentator Ian Gwyn Hughes, is the brainchild of Ceidiog Cyf, the award-winning TV production company set up by MD Nia Ceidiog in 1996. It’s being filmed at the  at the company’s new studio complex in Treforest.

Tina (Mark Goodman) started her career in Somerset 10 years ago when the drag act failed to turn up one night and Pontin’s Blue Coat entertainer Mark literally stepped into her high heels.

“I’d been doing stand-up comedy and some singing and this drag act went down really well, I was supposed to do 45 minutes but ended up on stage for one and a half hours,” said Mark.

European tours were followed by a regular slot at Minskys show bar in Cardiff.

But Mark is really excited by the new game show which he’s hoping will become a series.

“I’m going to be sitting on my throne with a laptop creating my own modern Welsh dictionary – called Tiniadur. I’m going to be Ian’s Debbie McGee!

“There’ll be a lot of banter between us because personally I think I should be running the show and not him. I’d never heard of him before!” said Mark.

“My stage name comes from the Australian comedy film about ballroom dancing, called ‘Strictly Dancing’. I think I’m the only Welsh speaking drag act in Wales,” said Caerphilly-born Mark.

“People like Danny LaRue and Lily Savage were my inspirations, but I’m a lot classier than Lily!”

The two competing panels on the show include ‘Coming of Age’ star, comedian Ceri Phillips, Welsh language champion and former Big Brother competitor Glyn Wise, and Donna Edwards who plays Britt Monk in Pobl y Cwm, on one team, and on the other, comedian Eirlys Bellin, Radio Cymru DJ Nia Medi and writer and comedian Tony Llewellyn.

Gaynor Davies, S4C’s Light Entertainment Editor said “We’re delighted to have Tina Sparkle in S4C’s firmament. She’s glamorous, cheeky and highly entertaining!. A new star is in the ascendant!”

Ceidiog Cyf managing director Nia explained: “It’s going to be a panel game about Wales and the Welsh which is full of laughs and with an historic and hysterical performance by the very glamorous Tina Sparkle.

“The show’s chaired by Ian who everyone will remember as a sports reporter but who is now the Head of Public Affairs at the Welsh FA.

“In one of the games we will get the panel’s verdict on how members of the public interpret Welsh words. In another the panel will have to identify which guest is actually a real relative of a very, very famous Welsh person.

“Another will have our teams creating new Welsh words from English and other languages – and Tina will decide whether they can be allowed into her new dictionary. Then  especially for St David’s Day they will be asked to nominate a new patron saint for Wales.

“It’s all a bit of fun with Tina’s fairy dust spread over it. This is the very first production from our spanking new studio at Treforest. I think it’s important we have some fun and not get too worried about what some people say about the Welsh. It’s important that we promote ourselves and the Welsh language, but it’s also important we have some fun too.

“We hope this becomes a regular show and looking to the future I’m sure it will draw in new viewers.”

The half hour show will be broadcast on S4C on Tuesday, March 1, St David’s Day, at 10pm.

Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru said:

“We’re so pleased that Chief Constable Vaughan has become the latest to join our campaign.  As someone who grew up gay in the South Wales Police area I find his even more encouraging.  It is a real sign of how far we have come, but also recognises we have a way yet to go.” He added  “South Wales Police are members of the Stonewall Diversity Champions programme and we’re recently ranked third top Police Force in the UK, they know that people do best when they can be themselves!”

The ‘It gets better.Today’ campaign tells young people that they don’t have to wait for their lives to improve – they can be great now.  It is inspired by the US campaign which has attracted messages of support from people such as President Obama, Hillary Clinton, Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson, and Justin Beiber.  In the UK it has attracted support from David Cameron, Sue Perkins, Brian Dowling, Clare Balding, Joe McElderry, Anthony Cotton, and many more.

The campaign launched in January features all Welsh four party leaders.

First Minister, and leader of the Welsh Labour Party Carwyn Jones said:

“we all want a society where people are valued as individuals, where there’s diversity and equality and respect and that means dealing with homophobia and homophobic bullying.”

Deputy First Minister and Plaid Cymru Leader Ieuan Wyn Jones added:

“you have the right to be who you are, when bullying is tackled and challenged in schools things can improve dramatically”.

In his message, Welsh Conservative Leader Nick Bourne stated that he is:

“proud to support the right of everybody to live their lives as they see fit”.

Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Kirsty Williams added:

“Wales is a great country in which to grow up but it can be miserable and frightening if you’re experiencing bullying because of your sexuality” adding “if you can speak out, if you can find help. We know that things really do get better”

Stonewall Cymru hopes to add other messages from public figures and celebrities as well as teachers and young people.

“with more people are coming out at school, lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils are becoming more visible than ever, we a thrilled that Wales’ leaders have supported our campaign”

Adrian George is a member of Guyz in Sync, the UK’s only all-male Latin and Ballroom formation dance team. The semi-finals featuring just the top 28 acts start on 30th January 2011. Guyz in Sync will be on screen in the second semi-final on 6th February 2011.

Guyz in Sync are twelve dancers aged 27 to 50 from various professional backgrounds who first came together to compete at the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) sports event World Outgames 2009 in Copenhagen. In their first competition they took the Gold medal. In August 2010 they brought home the Silver from the Gay Games Cologne, retaining their title as the world’s best all-male Latin and Ballroom formation team. Got to Dance is their first major step towards bringing the exciting world of same-sex Latin and Ballroom dancing to a broader public.

Adrian George, member of Guyz in Sync said: “Being in the Got to Dance semi-finals is very exciting and there is a lot at stake. We are squeezing in as much rehearsal time as we can and it’s a challenge to juggle that with my job. Showing the viewers our cheeky new routine will make it worth the effort in the end. If the audience can’t wait until then, they can join us on Facebook for all the latest news.”

Hadass Armon, co-director of Studio LaDanza, London and coach of Guyz in Sync, said: “I have worked with same-sex dancers for many years. This is an amazing opportunity to bring the beauty and power of same-sex dancing to a wider audience. I am so proud that the team has come this far.”

“This award recognises the hard work and determination of our employees to improve the workplace for colleagues who are lesbian, gay, or bisexual and I am delighted to be able to accept it on their behalf,” said Deputy Chief Constable, Jackie Roberts. “This is the first time we have featured in the top 100, and I’m sure we will continue to improve on this position in the years ahead.”

Joining Ms Roberts at the acceptance of the award in Cardiff was PC Jamie Lang, the force coordinator for the Gay Police Association.

“I’m extremely proud of the organisation for achieving this award,” said PC Lang. “It shows that the force has respect for those of us who are part of an invisible minority. Dyfed Powys Police too should be proud that it is an employer of choice for the lesbian, gay, and bisexual community. ”

Leading the improvements across the force was Superintendent Claire Parmenter. She believes the force can continue to improve on its success in the past twelve months.

“We’ve laid the foundations over the past year for improving things for our colleagues and the wider community, making them feel more comfortable and more valued in their workplace. I hope the coming year will see us work together to introduce initiatives that will build on this success.”

At National Museum Cardiff, People, Personalities and Power: Faces from Wales is a display of Welsh portraits from the museum’s collection to celebrate LGBT History Month on display until Sunday 8 May.

The display will include recently acquired photographs by Angus McBean (1904-1990), including a surreal self-portrait by McBean and a pair of portraits of legendary Welsh actor and playwright Emlyn Williams. Angus McBean’s biographer and close friend, Adrian Woodhouse, will be delivering a talk on McBean’s work on Friday 11 February, 1.05pm.

The talk will discuss how McBean’s sexual orientation influenced his photography and how he created sensational images of famous women and impossibly glamorous pictures of men. As well as discussing McBean’s famous images of stars like Audrey and Katherine Hepburn, Mae West, Elizabeth Taylor and Shirley Bassey, Adrian Woodhouse will be bringing along Angus’s superb prints of male beauties in their prime like Howard Keel and Laurence Olivier as well as complete unknowns. Other newly acquired works by McBean will also be on display nearby, including celebrated images of The Beatles, Shirley Bassey and Vivien Leigh as well as lesser known portraits of his family and friends.

Other portraits at National Museum Cardiff on display to celebrate LGBT History Month will include a striking image of Welsh artist Cedric Morris (1889-1982) by Lucian Freud, amongst others. Clare Smith, from the Museum’s art department will be giving a lunchtime talk, An Introduction to the display of Welsh portraits to celebrate LGBT History Month on Friday 18 February, 1.05pm.

There will be a special evening lecture at National Museum Cardiff on Ancient Greek Homosexuality on Thursday 10 February, 6pm. Join Professor Nick Fisher, Emeritus of Ancient History, Cardiff School of History and Archaeology to find out how did the different states in classical Greece view homosexual desire and love in different ways. At the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon the ‘We are Family’ exhibition, from 17 January to 13 May explores the theme of families and sexuality in the Roman World. Roman families were just as diverse as those today so come and find out more and think about what a family means to you!

At St Fagans: National History Museum, a group called Gay Ammanford will be displaying objects that are important to them in the Community Dresser, 1-28 February.

Academi in partnership with Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales and the LGBT Excellence Centre will be hosting a free event during LGBT History Month 2011. Short Stories, Poems and Songs with Paul Burston will take place at St Fagans: National History Museum on Saturday 12 February, 14.00-15.00. Celebrated author, Paul Burston will be presenting the event which will include performances from the Rainbow Group in Torfaen exploring young people’s identity through literature. To mark LGBT History Month, visitors to National Waterfront Museum in Swansea will be able to create their own colourful rainbow heart decoration on 12 & 13 February, 1pm-4pm.

Claire Thomas, Amgueddfa Cymru’s Diversity Officer, said, “Amgueddfa Cymru  is delighted to be celebrating LGBT History Month for the first time in 2011. We’ve recently joined Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme making us the first Museum to do so and what better way to celebrate than to hold a variety of exciting events at some of our museums.”

Stonewall’s ‘Top 100’ features employers across Britain who are leading the way in sexual orientation equality best practice. It’s the first time the force has featured in the top 100 of the workplace equality index, and is listed in 64th place.

“This is excellent news for us, and is a real testament not only to the determination of staff to improve things, but also to the support of colleagues engaged with Stonewall, both of which have been key to enabling us to achieve this,” said Deputy Chief Constable Jackie Roberts. “Over the past twelve months we have continued our investment in building our relationships and understanding of people from a wide variety of diverse backgrounds, including those from the gay, lesbian and bisexual community.

“We are delighted that our determination as an employer to provide a fair workplace where everyone is valued equally has been recognised in this way by Stonewall, and we are determined to further build on this success in the future.”

During the past year Dyfed-Powys Police has demonstrated support for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual employees and community members at the very highest level.

In February 2010 the Chief Constable and Deputy Chief Constable hosted an All-Wales conference for LGB staff.

Sexual Orientation Diversity Champion for the force, Superintendent Claire Parmenter held an ‘LGB Development Day’ for members of the LGB Staff Network and Gay Police Association members, and the Deputy Chief Constable opened the Swansea Pride Community event as the Diversity lead for the Police Service in Wales.

“I‘ve been the force Coordinator for the Gay Police association for the past seven years and I am immensely proud to work for an organisation that has proved it’s dedication toward its Gay, Lesbian and Bi-Sexual staff throughout the organisation,” said PC Jamie Lang. “I believe that this accolade goes someway to show that Dyfed-Powys Police is an employer of choice for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

“As part of an invisible minority, it’s helpful and reassuring that Dyfed Powys Police recognises and understands the needs of the LGB community and is happy to show us respect.”

“All these initiatives highlight our support for diversity and encourage people to be themselves,” said Superintendent Parmenter. “Our position in this list demonstrates that we are an equal opportunities employer, and the benchmarking exercise has enabled us to examine and improve initiatives across all our strands of diversity, ensuring that we provide the highest standards of service across all our communities.”

Each year Stonewall produces a list called The Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, which lists Britain’s top 100 employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff. This year Cardiff council has gone up a staggering 37 places.

Following on from the success of 2010, where the council made it into the top 100 and were placed at number 75, the council has now entered the top 50 of the index and are ranked at number 38.

Cardiff Council’s score in the index also rose from 142 points in 2010 to 164 points this year.

The new rank makes Cardiff Council the third highest placed employer in Wales and is the only Welsh Local Authority to feature on the list, which also includes the National Assembly for Wales and North Wales Police.

Stonewall received over 350 entries this year from employers across Britain, and as well as seeing an increase in the number of entries, the quality of entries was also up on 2010.

The Council has focused on reducing homophobia in schools and amongst young people.   Cardiff Council’s Schools & Lifelong Learning service became the first to achieve the Rainbow Mark in January 2010, in recognition of its work to tackle homophobic bullying in schools.  The Council’s “Loud and Proud” LGBT Youth Provision has also given young LGBT people a platform to raise awareness of the need for all young people to live in dignity, and has been active in building links to major policies such as the Cardiff Children and Young People Plan.

The Council’s LGBT Employee Network has continued to act as a point of support for LGBT employees amongst the Council’s 18,000 strong workforce, and has developed a number of promotions during the year for LGBT History Month, National Coming Out Day and the International Day Against Homophobia.

Council Leader, Cllr Rodney Berman, said: “After last year’s achievement of entering the top 100, we knew it would be a challenge just to maintain our position, so to have risen a further 37 places is fantastic news.

“With Cardiff Council being the largest employer in Wales we have a duty to ensure we create a good working environment for everyone. We have a committed workforce of managers and front line workers working hard to achieve this aim. We also know that making our employees feel valued helps ensure they in turn feel motivated to give the best for the Council.

“Along with our commitment to our workforce, the council also plays an active role in offering   the lesbian, gay and bisexual community of Cardiff support. In 2010 we were involved with a number of key events including our continued  financial and event support to the Cardiff Mardi Gras, to ensure it remains a key event in the city’s calendar.

We in the media have known for many years that Nigel was really born in Swansea and educated at he Dynevor School and then at  University of Wales, Swansea. We have respected his privacy and, in an unwritten agreement not disclosed the fact that he is Welsh.

Nigel has worked on three United States of America presidential elections in New York, Florida, and California which would have given him an opportunity to disguise his Welsh heritage further.

We understand that he told a certain ‘Red Top’ he is fed up with ‘living a lie’. He said (we hear through the grapevine):

“It was hard enough being a Gay Tory, let alone being Welsh”.

We at Welsh Icons would encourage any other gay men who are worried about being Welsh to come out of the closet. It is nearly 2011 and you will find that being Welsh is not much of an issue these days. In fact, we feel that a there a a few former athletes, weathermen and musicians who would have nothing to fear by declaring their Welshness.

We tried to contact the ‘flamboyant’ astrologer Russell Grant who, even though he was born in Hillingdon, has tried to be Welsh all his life for a comment but his assistant told us:

“Russell says, if that’s Welsh Icons, tell them I’m out”.

Statistics on sexual identity from the Integrated Household Survey (IHS) include data for Wales for the financial year 2009-2010.

The sexual identity question was developed and tested on a number of surveys in 2008 and launched on the IHS in 2009. The IHS is the first ONS survey that has been used to produce data on sexual identity. This is a more detailed bulletin based on data originally released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on 23rd September 2010, when a summary headline was released.

The Integrated Household Survey (IHS) is a composite household survey comprised of a core suite of questions from six current ONS household surveys and contains information from nearly 450,000 individual respondents across the UK, including 40,000 in Wales.

The key results are:

• In Wales, 95.6 per cent of people identified as heterosexual/straight, 1.3 per cent as gay/lesbian/bisexual, and 0.4 per cent as other whilst 2.7 per cent did not know, answer or respond to the question.
• Of those people in Wales who identified as gay/lesbian/bisexual over two thirds were under 45 years of age (70.7 per cent).
• Around four times as many females as males identified as bisexual (79.5 per cent and 20.5 per cent respectively) whilst two thirds of people who identified as gay/lesbian were males (66.6 per cent).

ONS intends to publish the rolling IHS dataset quarterly and submit the survey for assessment to become a National Statistic by the UK Statistics Authority in 2012.

“These figures show that a much lower proportion of people in Wales are defining themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual, compared to official estimates.

“While Wales is widely perceived as a fair and tolerant society, these figures suggest that fear of discrimination and prejudice based on sexual identity remains a problem in many Welsh communities.

“More needs to be done to ensure that Wales can become a fairer society where everyone has the opportunity to succeed regardless of their age, gender or sexual orientation.”

LGB&T Liaison Officers have been specially trained to provide victims with additional support throughout the investigative process. It is hoped this additional resource available to victims will encourage those who have experienced a hate crime to have more confidence in reporting it.

Fourteen officers and staff members from across the force have been identified as LGB&T liaison officers and more will be trained in six months time. Any victim of an LGB&T hate crime will be offered the assistance of one of the officers alongside the investigating officer. The main duties of the LGB&T officer include liaison with the LGB&T communities; to give information, support and advice to victims and witnesses of crimes and incidents; to signpost victims to other support agencies; give support and advice to officers dealing with homophobic incidents; promote an understanding amongst colleagues about the needs of local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities and to offer support and advice to police officers and staff.

A survey conducted by Gwent Police at the Mardi Gras (held in Cardiff in September) showed that 96 % of the 46 people questioned said that having an LGB&T Liaison Officer would be a good idea and 42 out of those people surveyed said that having a LGB&T Liaison Officer would encourage them to report incidents.

The posts were open to all officers and police staff and was not limited to those who identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The officers received two days of training from officers from Hampshire Constabulary who have had LGB&T Liaison officers since 1996.

Assistant Chief Constable Simon Prince said:

“It is estimated that one in 12 people in Gwent classes him or herself as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender which is a significant number of people in our force area. Not only do we want to provide the best service to the greatest number, what matters is being able to represent and give the best possible support to each and every member of the community. We hope that the introduction of LGB&T liaison officers will encourage members of the community to report hate crimes which are traditionally under reported. If we can encourage greater reporting it will enable us to gain a greater understanding of hate crime and the extent to which people are suffering but also to better enable us to tackle it”

Realistically with this figure considered to be understated a figure closer to 200,000 would more truly represent the extent of hate crime in the UK.

“In the field of hate crime one of the main issues is under-reporting” commented Mark Williams of Safer Wales.  “In recent years we’ve seen several reports  highlighting that only one in four cases of homophobic or racist abuse are reported. For people with learning disabilities the numbers are even lower  with research suggesting only one in ten cases are reported.”

There are a variety of reasons for this under-reporting including people not considering what has happened to them to be important enough to report to the police or fear of how the police may react to their incident or how they will be treated.

“Here in Wales we’re pleased to be working in partnership with the four Welsh police services and British Transport Police to really make a difference to victims of hate crime and harassment.  We’ve designed and developed the Report Hate Safer Wales which is a unique scheme for the people of Wales.  People can report online or through freepost leaflets to us when they don’t wish to contact the police.  We will only pass details to the police where people agree.  Even if consent is not given Safer Wales will still pass on brief information on a regular basis to help the police make a difference in our communities.”

“We’ve achieved a lot in our first year with reports coming in from across Wales covering cases ranging from verbal abuse to knife attacks. But we could do so much more and want anybody who has suffered any form of prejudiced based hostility whether it’s verbal abuse or worse to report to us here at Safer Wales.”

The poll, which had 1,536 respondents, found that lesbian, gay and bisexual people aged 60 and over came out at 37 on average. People aged 18 and under are coming out at 15 on average.

Ruth Hunt, Stonewall’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs, said: ‘People are coming out younger and younger. Everyone should come out when they feel ready and confident but this is an encouraging trend and sends a positive message to anyone not yet out: you don’t have to wait. Britain is a fairer country than it once was, and support is available to you.’

Ruth Hunt continues: ‘Young people are coming out in schools across Britain right now. As lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils become more visible than ever, it’s essential schools make things better for them. Stonewall can help make this happen. This National Anti-Bullying Week, we’re encouraging people to write to their local MPs and ask if their schools are using Stonewall resources – including our anti-homophobia DVD FIT – to tackle homophobic bullying.’

At the Volunteer and Community Justice awards held in Llandudno recently, the Diversity Independent Advisory Group was praised for its contribution to promoting equality and diversity throughout the force.

The group, representing different strands of diversity, provides help and advice to the police on critical incidents, policy development and strategic direction.

They have been a critical friend to the force and have challenged processes that have been established over many years.  The Criminal Justice Board appreciated the dedication shown by the group to their work and their willingness to attend and take calls for advice at very short notice and at all times in the day or night.

The Diversity Independent Advisory Group, which was established in 2007, needs more advisors who have knowledge and understanding of equality and diversity.

The range of issues the group advises on includes race, disability, sexual orientation, gender, transgender, religion and faith and age.

The work also involves policy development, training and the role of policing diverse communities and how the force responds to major emergencies.

The group is looking for people who are able to listen to and reflect and advocate the experiences of minority groups within North Wales.

Greg George, Head of Diversity in North Wales Police, said “This is a fantastic opportunity for members of the community to be a critical friend to the force on equality and diversity issue. Members have supported the force in various operations and in the development of policy, strategy and culture of the force.’
