The Darby and Joan club provides those who use it with a chance to leave the house and meet friends and enjoy activities as well as providing older people with a hot, nutritious meal, which can go a long way to reducing the isolation and loneliness that can set in when getting out and about is difficult.

Wendy Marshall, Service Delivery Manager for South East Wales, said: “We’re really pleased to welcome Ms Chapman to the WRVS Mountain Ash Darby and Joan club.  Having a chance to meet with our volunteers and experience the service firsthand is a fantastic way to experience just how important the club is to those who use it, and why the volunteers enjoy their work so much.”

We know that the contributions that volunteers make would amount to many billions of pounds if measured in economic terms, but seeing the human benefit of volunteering, both for volunteers themselves and to those they are helping, plainly shows that such activities are priceless.”

The Plaid leader and South Wales Central AM she was disappointed by the refusal of the company to visit the town to explain their reasons for axing their branch on Bute Street which is due for closure on August 10th.

Ms Wood wrote to David Rose, the Barclays Network Area Director, earlier this month to register her opposition to the branch closure.

In the letter she wrote: ‘For many local people this branch provides a vital service and will be a great loss to the local community.

‘The loss will be particularly felt by the more vulnerable and elderly Barclays bank customers of Treherbert who will not find a trip to the nearest branch in Treorci straightforward and may not be in a position to use your online banking facilities.

‘In some cases, the increased cost of travelling back and fore to Treorci from Treherbert will also be an issue.

‘Please can you give me the reasons for the branch closure, the details on the consultation that led to the decision and whether you would be prepared to outline the case for the branch closure in a public forum to the residents of Treherbert.’

In reply Mr Rose wrote: ‘The decision to close our Treherbert branch was taken after very careful consideration.  One of the considerations is the low useage of the branch, with transactions falling by 31% since 2007.

‘I do appreciate the concerns you raise about access to banking, and hope the following will go some way to assuring you of our continued support for local customers.

‘Customers will be able to use our branches at Treorci, Tonypandy and Ferndale, and our records show that 73% of Treherbert customers are already using the counter service or ATM at these branches.’

Mr Rose added that he ‘must decline’ the invitation to attend a public meeting in Treherbert.

Ms Wood said: “I regret Mr Rose’s decision not to engage with his customers in Treherbert in a public forum.  This would allow local people the opportunity to challenge some of the figures that have been quoted by Mr Rose in his correspondence with me.

“For example, it may be the case that 73% of Treherbert customers have used the services of the Barclays branch in Treorci at one point but he does not say how often they have been used – how many of those 73% used the Treorci facilities as a one-off?”

She added: “The closure of the last bank branch in Treherbert will be very detrimental to the town.

“It will also close down a vital life-line to the more vulnerable and elderly customers who, in some cases, won’t be able to travel to Treorci to do their banking.

“I hope Barclays will rethink their decision as it is not too late to change their mind.”

The Plaid leader was speaking after meeting with a group who come together every week in Clydach Vale in the Rhondda to provide support for each other.  The group includes former soldiers and emergency service workers.

One of the most common complaints from members of the group was a lack of understanding about the debilitating effects of PTSD from staff at the Department of Work and Pensions when rejecting the benefit applications of former soldiers.

They also said there was anecdotal evidence of former soldiers waiting far too long for treatment once they had been diagnosed with the condition.

South Wales Central AM Leanne Wood said:  “I am familiar with PTSD having previously worked as a Probation Officer.  It’s not an uncommon disorder among people within the criminal justice system.

“I have raised the issue of better support from the MOD for former soldiers suffering with the condition in the Senedd. Plaid Cymru has also been at the fore of highlighting the difficulties former soldiers face in adjusting to life away from the combat zone, with many ending up homeless or in prison.

“Hearing the real stories of the PTSD sufferers at the Clydach group brought the condition alive. People go through hell with PTSD, those around them can too.

“The group painted a bleak picture when talking of the lack of support for people leaving the army.  PTSD sufferers can face long waiting times, long distances to travel if they can get treatment, little understanding of the condition within mainstream health services and little empathy from an uncaring benefits system.

“It has been predicted that PTSD is going to become an increasing problem for the health service and for society to deal with as more and more soldiers with experience of fierce combat in Afghanistan leave the army to return to civilian life.”

Ms Wood added: “I reiterate my call for the MOD to take some responsibility for ex-service personnel in Wales by sharing the financial burden for treating them for PTSD with the Welsh Government.”

Leanne Wood raised the issue in questions to the First Minister less than a week after it was revealed that Russell Roberts raked in the six-figure salary from his five jobs, all funded on the public purse.

Leanne Wood said: “It must be hugely disappointing to people in RCT that the First Minister won’t condemn the five jobs and £100,000 salary earned by Russell Roberts. His refusal to condemn suggests Carwyn Jones is perfectly happy at the number of roles and pay of Russell Roberts. ”

Pauline Jarman, Plaid leader on RCT Council, said: “I’m sure a lot of people in Tonyrefail and across RCT struggling to pay their bills and keep a roof over their head would strongly disagree with the First Minister’s attitude.

“The Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales has made it perfectly clear that council leaders and executive members are paid their allowances on the basis that a council leader’s job should be full time. How can Russell Roberts fulfill his main role when he has so many others?

“I know Allan Pritchard, the Plaid leader of Caerphilly council, only has one paid role – his job as leader.”

The AM for South Wales Central was shown around the Cilfynydd-based microbrewery by company director Nick Otley on an afternoon that also saw her campaigning in Pontyclun, Talbot Green and Ynysybwl.  She was joined on the Otley brewery tour by Plaid Cymru’s candidate for the Beddau ward, James Radcliffe.

During the tour, Mr Otley explained the brewing process from beginning to end and outlined his company’s plans for expansion into a larger industrial unit nearby in order to keep up with the increasing demand for Otley ales.

Ms Wood said: “As a member of the Campaign for Real Ale and a big fan of the various ales from Otley, the tour was very interesting.  It is hard to believe that a small micro-brewery like Otley could have such an impact in the burgeoning ale industry.

“I was particularly impressed by the company’s commitment to sustainability as Nick revealed that the various by-products from the brewing process are given away for free to local allotment holders and farmers for use as fertiliser and animal feed.

“Small local companies such as Otley, particularly those who are community-focused, are such an important part of the Welsh economy.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the Welsh economy and their contribution will increase in the years to come.  Welsh food and drink companies have a central role in any plan to increase our food sovereignty, as advocated in my Greenprint policy document.

“I’d encourage people get behind these Welsh companies and do whatever they can to support them as they have great potential to boost our self-sufficiency and help support the local economy.”

Ms Wood added:

“I wish the Otley microbrewery well for the forthcoming expansion and I hope they continue to go from strength-to-strength.”

Russell Roberts is paid £2,593 a year as a member of the English-based Local Government Improvement and Development Board. That takes his annual earnings to a staggering £102,443 A YEAR.

In 2010-11 Russell Roberts picked up £58,962, including £1,177 in travel and subsistence, from his work as leader of the council. He also received £23,544 as chairman of South Wales Police Authority and £13,344 from Cwm Taf Health Board.

Earlier this month Plaid Cymru revealed that Russell Roberts as deputy leader of the Welsh Local Government Association received £4,000 a year.

Greg Powell, who is standing against Russell Roberts in Tonyrefail East ward in next month’s elections, said: “This six-figure councillor is laughing all the way to the bank. He is totally out of touch with voters in RCT and Tonyrefail. How can he justify having five paid roles from public sector?

“It is important electors in Tonyrefail, many of whom are struggling to keep a roof over their heads send a clear message that they’ve had enough of this fat cat councillor who must surely be the highest paid member of a local authority in Wales.”

Pauline Jarman, Plaid Cymru leader on RCT council, said: “People in RCT are entitled to ask Councillor Roberts how he can justify having five jobs funded through the public sector. How on earth can he be spending the necessary time as council leader which the Independent Remuneration Board for Wales has made it clear that should be a full time role?

“The Welsh Local Government Minister should tell Councillor Roberts that these sorts of practices are unacceptable but because he is a Labour councillor he will probably sit on his hands and turn a blind eye. If anyone knows if Councillor Roberts has further public sector jobs I’d be pleased to hear from them.

“I challenge Councillor Roberts to justify his five paid jobs but I’m not holding my breath. He is clearly not able to defend the indefensible. He’s the head of a tired Labour Party in RCT that has ditched its principles and lost touch with reality.

“He recently put his hand up against giving staff a one off £200 ex-gratia payment which we proposed at the recently budget meeting following the national employers announcing a third year of pay freezes. At the same time he was coining it in from five places.”

The carriageway has been closed to all vehicles for a number of weeks due to emergency repairs needed on embankments at the side of the road.

Dr Barry Morgan will lead a service at St Mary Magdalene Church to mark its £140,000 restoration. The church has been completely restored and repainted and has a new roof. Its bell has also been re-hung which means it can now ring out in the village for the first time in 15 years.

The work took six months to complete and between Christmas and March the congregation had to move out to hold services in the nearby community centre. Money for the project was raised by parishioners through various events, including a duck race, concerts and auctions, and from a number of grants, including ones from the environmental body AMGEN and the Church in Wales.

The Archdeacon of Morgannwg, Chris Smith, who is the parish priest at Cwmbach, said the church, which is 130-years-old this year, was now a great resource for the whole community.

He said, “This church is here for everyone and everyone loves it. People have given their time generously to bring the project to completion and we hope they will all join us and Archbishop Barry to celebrate what we have achieved together.”

Archbishop Barry said, “This is a fantastic achievement for a relatively small and not so affluent community.  It is a true cause for celebration.”

The service takes place on April 12 at 7.30pm – all are welcome.

And the couple, of Tyntyla Road, Llwynypia, who celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary recently, have told how music played a large part throughout their long and happy marriage.

The couple first met at Bodringallt Youth Club, Ystrad, where local youngsters were entertained with singing and dancing. Brynley left for the RAF soon after they met and was stationed in Germany. On his return, in 1952, he and Jean married at St Stephen’s Church, Ystrad.

Bryn and Jean were big fans in their younger days of singing star Al Jolson and ‘went everywhere’ to see Jolson’s films. Bryn joined the Treorchy Male Choir on leaving the RAF and sang with them for 20 years. “Singing is wonderful. It’s the most rewarding experience,” he said.

During their working lives, Jean was a cook in Llwynypia Day Centre. Bryn was employed by the local Council, building bridges and other steelwork. He later worked as a welder and fitter in Treorchy and went on to become deputy manager of Llwynypia Day Centre.

The couple’s only daughter, Linda, who has sadly passed away, was a talented singer. Linda won a number of competitions and appeared on popular TV show New Faces.

Jean, aged 81, and Bryn, 83, have two grandchildren, Rachel and Matthew; one great granddaughter, Seren, and one greatgrandson, Lewys.

Both Jean and Bryn worked for many years with people with learning disabilities. They were volunteers for Rhondda Gateway Club, based at Llwynypia Day Centre and, over 40 years, helped stage around 400 shows and pantomimes.

The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on March 29 with a visit from Rhondda Cynon Taf Mayor, Cllr Sylvia Jones, who congratulated them and presented them with a bouquet of flowers.

“Jean and Bryn have spent so many years bringing happiness to other people’s lives. It was a pleasure to spend time with them on this very special occasion,” said Cllr Jones.

“We had a great time – we made a week of it and we had a card from the Queen!” said Bryn.

“Jean and I go to the Emmanuel Christian Centre and also to the old age club in Ystrad. We had a cake there and my great grand-daughter was there. It was fantastic.”

The opportunity has come about through “Pont”, Rhondda Cynon Taf’s community to community link with the region of Uganda which began in 2000.

Since then the connection between the two areas of similar population, has strengthened with hundreds of volunteers undertaking visits to the African country to assist the area through sharing expertise and skills in a whole host of areas from finance and construction to health care and politics.

This summer the Pontypridd construction team of 18 members will again visit Mbale to help build an essential new facility for the girls of the Bubuto area.

At present the girls walk up to four hours a day to get to and from school and along this journey some are being attacked and sexually assaulted. Girls from further away have no access to a secondary education at all as a result.

The dormitory, which will accommodate over 100 girls will change their lives and protect them, as it will allow them to stay safely in the school and improve their education, reduce travel and maintain their health and safety.

A group of students from Bubuto visited Pontypridd in 2011 and shared their knowledge and information about their country with the young people of Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Head of Geography at Pontypridd High School, Sean Baldwin will lead the construction team. Joining him will be Deputy Headteacher Ken Phillips, Head of Construction Steve Jones and Lee Randell, a Construction Teacher. Lloyd Konten, a school technician will be part of the team along with two members of staff from Screw Fix and Persimmon Homes

The students also involved in the project are currently following courses in construction and include Antony Ramsey, Matthew Logan, Ashley Moses, Lloyd Davies and Sean Barlow. Sean Barlow was construction pupil of the year 2011 and is now a trainee Project Manager, employed by Persimmon Homes who are another sponsor of the project.

Mr Baldwin explained, “Talking to the girls in Bubutu can be a heart breaking experience! The daily hardships they endure to get the chance to receive an education are staggering.”

It is believed that there are 350,000 carers in Wales. Together, it is calculated that they save the Welsh economy the equivalent of a second NHS a year – £5.69 billion.

Mrs Chapman also raised measures taken by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to help and support carers in her constituency. These measures, part of the Council’s Carers Support Project, include stress-busting workshops for carers and ensuring that they have access to the appropriate information.

The First Minister said: “The programme for government commits us to refreshing the carers strategy by April 2013, and that will provide us with an opportunity to look at examples of good practice along the lines that you have just outlined in RCT”.

Cynon Valley AM Christine Chapman said: “These extra Community Support Officers will play an important role across the Cynon Valley in helping to tackle anti-social behaviour, related criminal activity and domestic violence.”

At last year’s Assembly election, Welsh Labour was elected on a manifesto that pledged to fund 500 CSO posts. In addition to the 206 for the South Wales Police Force area, it is planned that 6 extra British Transport Police CSOs will be based in Aberdare, with their training due to commence in May 2012.

Mrs Chapman said: “These new officers will go a long way to countering the cuts in police funding that have been imposed by the Westminster Government, and I know communities all across the Cynon Valley will welcome these extra CSOs.”

Minister for Local Government and Communities Carl Sargeant said:  “These CSOs are not a replacement for warranted police officers. They will be a valuable and visible addition for existing police resources, engaging with local residents and community organisations and providing support and reassurance.”

The father-of-two from Aberaman has gained employment with Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd who are carrying out extensive streetscape work throughout Aberdare as part of the Rhondda Cynon Taf Council project.

Colin’s role involves receiving deliveries, making sure all stocks are replenished and ensuring the smooth running of getting the necessary supplies to those on site undertaking the works.

As part of the Council regeneration scheme, jobs are being introduced for economically inactive individuals in the County Borough.

Mr Barnett, aged 30 explained, “Not only is the project itself changing Aberdare for the better, but it’s had a direct impact on my life and that of my children. I was unemployed for over a year, so as you can image it’s been a very difficult time.

“The opportunity to find employment with Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd has been fantastic and I’m enjoying the work at the yard with a great group of fellow workers. It really has been a wonderful opportunity and I’m grateful for the ability to work for a living again.”

While many jobs have been lost during the recent economic downturn, the Council’s contractors continue to fulfill their contractual arrangements to employ individuals during the course of the contract.

Now celebrating the six-month anniversary since the regeneration project began, Aberdare is currently benefiting from its largest cash injection of £7.7million thanks to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council securing financial support from the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund, Heads of the Valleys Programme and the Targeted Match Fund.

The remainder of the funding package is provided by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and the private sector.

Since August 2011 Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd and design engineers Capita Symonds have been working closely in partnership with the Council as the scheme develops.

The Aberdare Town Centre project includes streetscape improvements that will focus on four key areas: Commercial Street, Canon Street, Victoria Square and Library Square. The improvements will involve new footpaths and carriageways using quality natural stone paving, and new exciting features including walls, benches, steps, quality street furniture and street lighting.

The project also includes town centre property improvements, under the Aberdare Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) and Townscape Enhancement Programme (TEP). These offer financial support to businesses and property owners to make external and internal building improvements to enhance the quality of the premises and bring disused space back into use.

To date the TEP scheme has approved monies for multi-media company Tantrwm to undertake major refurbishment works to  a vacant property on Gadlys Road and the Aberdare Market Company who have been approved funding to carry out repairs and an internal refurbishment to give the vacant Market Tavern a new lease of life.

A total of 70 TEP enquiries have been received resulting in Council officers discussing the funding options available to commercial property owners including 70% funding.

It takes place at Aberdare Golf Club on Friday, 20 April, 2012, with some fantastic prizes up for grabs to the top golfers on the day. The event is being organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

All proceeds raised at the event will go to the Mayor’s Charities, which this year are Viva Wales; RCT Crossroads; Rhondda Powerhouse Trust, Llwynypia; Mid Rhondda Operatic Society; GTFM Community Radio (Taff Ely); Colstars Youth Theatre (Cynon Valley).

Mayor,Cllr Sylvia Jones, is inviting golfers to join her for a day of fun and fundraising.

The event will include a:

• Stableford Pairs competition
• Refreshments at the half-way house
• Two-course meal after game
• Prizes for first, second and third pairs
• Additional prizes for the longest drive and nearest to the pin
• Presentation of awards

The cost of the day is £80 per pair and includes all of the above.

Mayor, Cllr Sylvia Jones, said: “The golf tournament promises to be a good day of fun and fundraising. Everyone will enjoy a great competition, followed by a meal and presentations in the clubhouse later.

“Added to this of course, we will also have some breathtaking views of Rhondda Cynon Taf as the venue is set high on the hillside.

“Most importantly, this popular event helps raise funds for some very worthy causes so please come along on the day and offer your support.”

Pupils from Tonypandy Community College joined with local theatre group the LMT Academy to host the It’s Showtime! extravaganza at the Muni Arts Centre, raising more than £1,500 for local charities.

Talented pupils wowed the audience with songs from Mamma Mia, and the crowd also cried out for ‘More!’ when members of the LMT Academy performed songs from Oliver and Footloose.

Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Mayor Cllr Sylvia Jones, who was a special guest at the show, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed myself, thanks to the talented performers who, for the fourth year running, put on a great show filled with popular songs.

“I am extremely grateful to them for organising the event and also for donating the proceeds to such good causes.”

Funds raised from the evening will be donated to the Mayor’s six chosen charities: Viva Wales; RCT Crossroads; Rhondda Powerhouse Trust (Llwynypia); Mid Glamorgan Operatic Society; GTFM Community Radio (Taff Ely); and Colstars Youth Theatre (Cynon Valley).

Martin Childs, director of learning for the Performing Arts Faculty at Tonypandy Community College, said: “The students never fail to amaze me with their talent and desire to perform at the highest level. Well done to all.”

The sites will continue to remain open as normal, however there may be some minor disruption to the service on the day of transfer.

The transaction is expected to go smoothly however there will be a Project Manager from WRG available at both sites on the 1st and 2nd April to help with any issues that arise.

The Pwllfawatkin Recycling Centre, which is also managed by WRG, will remain open as normal.

The internet is now an integral part of everyday life but more than eight million people in the UK, many of whom are aged over 50, continue to be excluded from large parts of daily life because they have no access to a computer and are not online.

“Spring Online” is an award-winning initiative taking place across the country to encourage more people to surf the Internet and learn some of the computer basics which can help them in every day life.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is celebrating “Spring Online” week from April 23rd to 27th by holding 16 events in libraries right across the County Borough.

With plenty of valuable support from quality-assured tutors, residents can learn all about basic internet usage, from online shopping to using emails.

Of the 16 classes, 12 will concentrate on Internet browsing, while the other four will concentrate on how to download applications, use online e-books and audio that the Council Library has on offer.

Last year, Spring Online helped an incredible 50,000 older people get online at 2,500 events around the country.

Officers would like to speak to them in relation to the theft of a significant amount of cash from a nearby house.

At around midday, the 63 year-old victim was walking along Rheola Street when he was approached by two males with a large white van selling mattresses. When he agreed to buy one, he was given help by two males to take it to his home address – a flat in the area.

Once the two males returned to the van and left the scene, the man realised money had been taken from his property.

One of the males was white, with short fair hair and smooth skin. He was between 25 – 30 years of age, approximately 5ft 11, and spoke with a welsh accent. He was wearing casual clothes.

The second male is described as having short, dark hair with a stocky build. He was approximately 5ft 10, and around 30 years-old. He also spoke with a Welsh accent and was wearing casual clothing.

DI Phil Cam said: “We are confident that other people would have been approached that day and can help us identify who these men are. They may have travelled around so we are also looking to speak to people beyond Mountain Ash or Cynon who may have been approached.”

All children and young people aged eight to 16 are welcome to join us and learn amazing new skating tricks. Never skated before? There is nothing to worry about – all equipment is provided and staff are on hand to show you the ropes.

The roller skating sessions are free and fun and just what you need to put a Spring in your step.

They take place on Tuesday, April 10 and Friday April 20. Sessions for those aged eight to 11 runs from 10am to 12pm and the session for those aged 12 to 16 runs from 1pm to 3pm.

There are limited spaces for this activity, please try and book seven days in advance. You will also need a junior
Morecard, which you can sign up for on the day.

The event forms part of the ongoing Leisure For Life campaign being delivered by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to ensure all residents – regardless of their age, ability or what activities they are interested in – live healthier, more active lifestyles while also having fun and enjoying social experiences.

Now registered deaf and blind, the 90-year-old retired schoolteacher continues to live independently in her home thanks to the Council’s dedicated Sensory Services Team and a range of high-tech and innovative gadgets installed in her Aberdare home!

The Sensory Services Team supports hundreds of children, young people and adults across Rhondda Cynon Taf who have hearing impairments, sight loss or both, supporting individuals, their parents and carers.

A well-known local historian and author, Nansi has always been extremely active in the community and has written many books on her locality, including the best-selling book, A History of Hirwaun and Rhigos, she also helped the Council unveil its Blue Plaque at Hirwaun Ironworks.

Mrs Selwood has four children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her husband Jack sadly passed away in 1996 and since then she has lived independently, with the support of her family and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

“Literature has been my life and when my eyesight started deteriorating in 2000 it was a major blow to me – I still find it frustrating at times,” said Mrs Selwood.

“Not being able to read my own personal mail was devastating, which is why I decided to learn Braille with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Sensory Team. It was hard going at first, but with the Braille tutor Lynda Dixon, I managed to master it and it has allowed me to enjoy my life once again.

“Your sight is something we all take for granted. It is not until it is cruelly taken away from you that you realise how valuable it is.”

Cllr Mike Forey, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Well-being, said: “Our Sensory Services Team is made up of first-class specialist workers wo are qualified to deliver a range of innovative support measures to allow our residents to cope with every day living and maintain their independence.

“Many people who suffer a sensory loss lose confidence in their ability to run their home, prepare meals and maintain standards. Our team can help them regain their independence by simply changing the way they do things or by using techniques and equipment.

“By working closely with our many partner agencies, along with other sections of the Council itself, we are able to deliver a comprehensive service through our Sensory Services Strategy to all residents of the County Borough.”

Mrs Selwood is full of praise of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council for helping her to continue to life a full life in the independence of her own home.

She said: “I cannot thank Rhondda Cynon Taf Council enough for all the help and support they provide to me. The Council’s Sensory Team is absolutely fantastic, especially my Braille tutor Lynda Dixon.

“They are the experts in their field and always give me guidance and advice whenever I need it.”

Repairs are needed to the double cattle grid on the carriageway as it comes off the Abercynon roundabout on to the A4059 Aberdare road.

The welding will only take a few hours, but it will be necessary to close the westbound exit off of the roundabout on to the A4059 while they are carried out.

Traffic will be diverted via the A470 to the A465 and back into Aberdare.

Motorists are urged to take heed of signage and diversions during this time. The South East Wales Trunk Road Agency apologises for any inconvenience caused, but the works are of an emergency and urgent nature.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s impressive website dedicated to the regeneration and promotion of Aberdare town centre has welcomed visitors from around the world since it was launched four months ago.

The site, which can be found at www.myaberdare.com explores the many achievements already accomplished in the town, along with the schemes currently being undertaken by the Council following the cash injection of £7.7million.

Visitors are able to learn more about the several phases of the ongoing project. Working with the Council’s Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd and design consultants Capita Symonds, work is already well underway throughout the main thoroughfare.

The new paving and road surfacing are two elements of the regeneration work to the street scene of Aberdare which will combine with new street furniture, signing and distinctive lighting in key areas. The paved areas will also be widened in the town to enhance the experience of every visitor while significant areas are developed into attractive public spaces.

The website also explains the Aberdare Townscape Enhancement Programme and Townscape Heritage Initiative where traders have the opportunity of applying for funding of up to 70% towards enhancing their commercial property.

The £7.7million Aberdare Regeneration Project was made possible by the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund, Heads of the Valleys programme and Targeted Match Funding, plus the Councils own financial resources, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and private sector contributions.

The website allows visitors the opportunity to learn more about a series of schemes taking place in Victoria Square, Cannon Street, Commercial Street, Market Street and at Library Square with detailed descriptions of works and where possible, artist’s impressions of the final proposals.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Safer Communities Cllr Paul Cannon explained: “The website allows the public a fresh, new look at Aberdare and with 5,000 visitors in such a short period of time has become the one-stop destination for any internet user to find out more about the accurate and precise regeneration work taking place in the town centre.

“The many regeneration projects already successfully delivered and those ongoing will come as a surprise to people who haven’t been to Aberdare in the last year or two and this will hopefully attract more of them to come back to the town and enjoy the shops, the restaurants and the events and activities on offer.”

“We are providing a positive, honest viewpoint of Aberdare and communication through the website plays a major role in the ongoing regeneration of the town centre.”

The Pontypridd programme focuses on adding value to the works undertaken by Sainsbury’s to improve access from the town centre to their new store on the Brown Lenox site.

As part of the work to improve the access to Sainsbury’s new £50 million store, traffic signals will be added to the Bridge Street roundabout, together with pedestrian crossings on each of the A470 slip roads.

Further funding has been secured through the South East Wales Transport Alliance (SEWTA) to include a bus lane, costing £300,000 which will run from the roundabout, alongside Ynysangharad War Memorial Park towards the town.

Every hour 23 buses use this route from the A470 to Pontypridd Bus Station, bringing 2,700 passengers a day into the town. Local bus operator, NAT Group, has already registered a new service that will link Sainsbury’s to the town centre and others are expected to follow.

The work that is currently underway in the vicinity of the A470 Bridge Street roundabout will continue until the Summer 2012.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Sewta have submitted a bid for further funding in 2012/13 to provide more improvements to the transport corridor between Pontypridd and Cardiff as well as the centre of Pontypridd and the results of the bid should be announced by the Welsh Government shortly.

Cllr Andrew Morgan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Customer Care and Emergency Planning said, “The introduction of the bus lane will provide additional capacity for buses, reduce delays for passengers and improve travel time reliability, whilst still maintaining current access levels for other motorists.

“The work is being introduced alongside the largest cash injection Pontypridd town centre has ever experienced. Currently Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is delivering a £10.5million regeneration programme in the town centre.

“This is part of a wider masterplan amounting to almost £80million with the opening of Sainsbury’s and the new Riverside Shopping Development happening alongside the large-scale refurbishment of Pontypridd Museum and Pontypridd Train Station.

“The highways workforce are heavily dependant on support of motorists and whilst works may cause some minor disruptions, I would urge them to be patient whilst these essential works are carried out.

“This investment not only improves our highway network but also supports local public transport, jobs and growth.”

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council working in partnership with the Welsh Government is currently ploughing an additional £9million into improving the fabric of the highway network throughout the County Borough on top of the £10million alreadu spent for the benefit of motorists and residents alike. This investment will improve the condition of the roads and help to eliminate pot-holes.

Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Evan James will lead the UK-wide Earth Hour in a few weeks time in celebration of their outstanding environmental achievements.

The Welsh medium school on Rhondda Road will be the first to switch off the lights for WWF’s Earth Hour to show they want to create a brighter future for the planet. Other iconic landmarks like Cardiff Castle and the Houses of Parliament will follow.

The primary school entered a short-story competition by WWF and Earth Hour 2012’s official partner More Than, offering communities the chance to lead the UK switch off and win a £1,000 grant towards organising a special event on the night.

The winning school will be organising a candlelit walk through Pontypridd, inviting other schools and businesses to join in to celebrate Earth Hour on March 31st.

WWF’s Earth Hour is a global phenomenon with hundreds of millions of people turning off their lights to show they want to create a brighter future for the planet. In 2011 a record 138 countries took part and this year WWF hope it will be better than ever.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning Cllr Eudine Hanagan said, “I would like to congratulate the children and staff at Ysgol Evan James who are again a credit to the County Borough.

”We are very pleased that the school, which does so much to help improve the environment and campaign over eco-friendly issues, has been rewarded for their efforts in this way. It really is a great honour and we are all very proud of them.”

Ysgol Evan James has consistenly been championing enviroment activities, from revamping ther school yard using recycled materials such as wooden crates and tyres, to building a greenhouse out of re-used plastic bottles and using food waste to make their own compost.

Headteacher Moira Greaney said, “Winning WWF’s Earth Hour Community Competition is a fantastic result. We’re really proud of the work we do every day to teach children the importance of taking care of our planet and hope we’ll be able to inspire others in our local community and across the UK too.

”We’re all very excited about March 31st and looking forward to bringing the town together to celebrate with a candlelit walk”.

Head of WWF Cymru Anne Meikle said, “It’s wonderful that such a superb entry from Wales has won this UK-wide competition. We’re so impressed by the enthusiasm and creativity shown by Ysgol Evan James.

“WWF’s Earth Hour is about people coming together to celebrate our world, local communities and their passion for a brighter future, so Ysgol Evan James is the perfect community to lead the switch off.”

The two senior church leaders are spending a morning at St. John Baptist School, Aberdare, following an invitation from the pupils last year.

They will join them for their morning service, teach A-Level Religious Education to Year 13 pupils, and be quizzed on a range of topics by younger pupils.

It will be the first time in the history of the school that an Archbishop of Canterbury has visited. He will be accompanied by a regular visitor and great supporter of the school, Dr Barry Morgan, the Archbishop of Wales.

Pupils persuaded the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, to visit the school when they interviewed him at Westminster Abbey at a service to mark the bicentenary of The National Society.

As Mason Morgan, Head Boy said of that interview in Westminster, “It was an incredible experience to interview the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of Wales, as we were able to pose deep and complicated questions about the Church and our personal faith and beliefs. We were truly amazed by the humility, honesty and speed of their answers and the ease with which they answered such deep questions. We also like to think that we made quite an impression on the Archbishop of Canterbury with him returning the favour as he has chosen to visit us during his official trip to Wales this year!”

A Year 7 pupil said, “I’ve only seen him on the television but it will be awesome to ask him questions. I want to ask him, what is the most amazing part of his work and what is the hardest part of it?”  Anna Dalley, a Year 10 pupil added, “ It will be amazing to be in a service led by the leader of the Anglican church.”

Dr Susan Mitchell, Head Teacher, said, “We are absolutely delighted and thrilled about the forthcoming visit.  This will be an inspirational and most elating day which we are awaiting with great eagerness. For me personally it will also be one of the highlights of my personal and professional life.

“The Christian ethos is at the heart of our school life and it is a great honour and privilege to have the worldwide leader of the Anglican Communion at our school, and the Archbishop of Wales who regularly spends time with pupils and staff at the school. Pupils and staff are excited about meeting, and spending time with them and listening to their views. I am proudly anticipating that the Archbishops will be impressed by the caring and kind nature of our pupils as well as their knowledge and understanding of worldwide issues.”

Mrs Chapman was quizzed by members, who asked the local AM questions on a range of topics from the health services to public transport. Mrs Chapman said “I was glad to attend the meeting, and thoroughly enjoyed the lively debate it allowed me to have with local residents”.

The Cynon Valley AM attended the meeting on Friday 2 March after being invited by Area Secretary John Davies, and took questions from the members assembled. The Area Committee is the local body overseeing branches of the Association, established in 1939, based in the Cynon Valley.

Speaking after the meeting, Mrs Chapman said: “We know we have an aging population, and the National Old Age Pensioners Association of Wales does excellent work in representing its members. I am keen to work closely with the local group, and pay tribute to their sterling work”.

Area Secretary John Davies said: “Members were delighted with the way Christine dealt with a very broad range of questions which had concerned them. We look forward to having her visit again soon”.

The persecution of birds of prey is one of the UK’s six wildlife crime priorities. In 2011 the peregrine falcon was added to five other species highlighted as of most concern.

Mrs Chapman said: “Five of these incidents related to peregrine falcons, including four nest robberies of eggs. The RSPB also refers to the ‘persistent problem’ of the illegal poisoning of peregrines in South Wales”.

Environment Minister John Griffiths said: “We take environmental crime and these sorts of incidents very seriously indeed. We work very closely with the police and organisations such as the RSPB carrying out operations to target people suspected of taking part in this sort of criminal activity. We are very concerned about these matters and we will continue our partnership approach”.

The minor injuries unit at Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda, which was shut last October due to staff shortages, is set to re-open in April or May, Plaid Cymru AM Leanne Wood has learnt.

The South Wales Central AM raised the issue with Cwm Taf Health Board following persistent rumours about the future of the unit. Cwm Taf Health Board moved nurses from the £36m building, near Tonypandy, to the accident and emergency at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, near Llantrisant, because of staff shortages.

In correspondence with Leanne Wood, Allison Williams, Chief Executive of the Cwm Taf Health Board, said: “We have successfully appointed seven Advanced Emergency Practitioners with staggered start-dates in April and May.

“We are optimistic that this will enable us to re-open the MIU during April and are currently working through the logistics. We aim to reinstate the service Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) as previously in place but in our effort to get it open as soon as possible, we may need to go with shorter days in the first instance as we build up the staff .

“We are looking to use the opportunity of the re-opening of the MIU to have a big push on public education to ensure that we get the right people attending appropriate to their clinical need – we need to ensure minor illness is appropriately directed to the GP practice and that more major conditions go direct to the A & E department. To this end we are looking at ways of effectively triaging and directing patients at source and this could be an innovative new approach for Wales which we are quite excited about.”

Leanne Wood said: “This is good news. I’m pleased to hear the health board is fulfilling its promise to re-open the MIU once the appropriate staffing was in place – many people were sceptical that it would re-open at all.

“The temporary closure has meant people in the Rhondda have had extra expense of travelling to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. I look forward to seeing a return to the same opening hours that were in operation before the closure.”

“I welcome the announcement that Peacocks is to be bought by Edinburgh Woollen Mill, which is good news for the majority of staff working for the company. This is, however, tempered by sadness for the people employed in the stores that will be closing.

“It is great that the store in Aberdare will remain open, and I am sure the announcement came as a big relief to staff and their families. Many people in Cynon Valley work or know people who work in other stores such as Pontypridd or in Peacocks’ main offices or warehouse – this news will also be welcome to them.

“It is good that this much-loved brand will remain on our high street”.

The event, which is open to the public and free to attend, is being held to celebrate St David’s Day and showcase the best of Wales’ food and drink suppliers.

Enfys Fox, regional marketing manager for Tesco in Wales, said: “We go out of our way to source a wide range of products from Welsh suppliers because of the quality, freshness and diversity that is available. This makes Welsh food accessible to consumers as well as allowing producers to target a large market.

“Welsh food is environmentally sustainable and buying it boosts the local economy. It also tastes great and showcase events like Enjoy the Taste of Wales, are a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate this.”

“Our Welsh suppliers grow with Tesco, and we are proud to support Welsh agriculture and manufacturing, selling more than 560 Welsh products. Just under half of our suppliers are bringing their great tasting products to the Enjoy the Taste of Wales roadshow.”

Visitors to Enjoy the Taste of Wales will be able to take a culinary tour of the region, browsing stalls, meeting producers and sampling food and drink from all over Wales.

There will be two main areas at the event:

•    The Tesco Cookery Theatre – Well-known chef and leading Welsh food consultant Hazel Thomas.
•    The Tesco Fair – a collection of producer marquees and stands, including Carmarthenshire Cheese Co., Hurns Brewing Company, Mario’s Ice Cream and the Welsh Soup Company.

Tesco is the largest private sector employer in Wales, working with more than 16,000 people across its 97 food stores, Magor distribution centre and Cardiff head office. Working with 70 suppliers in the region and stocking over 560 different Welsh products, sales of Welsh products through Welsh stores reached £100 million last year.

Tesco’s dedicated local sourcing office in Wales helps identify and support small, local suppliers. This event also presents Welsh producers who are not yet working with Tesco with an opportunity to showcase their products and meet with the Welsh buying team.

Despite fingertip searches by specialist teams and searches of a number of addresses across the community, the firearm has not been located and until it is recovered by police it presents a risk to the public.

Local people are being urged to contact 999 if they know of its whereabouts, and are advised not to handle the object in any way.

People who know where the weapon is, who are concerned about revealing their identity can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Superintendent Simon Clarke said: “Despite sustained efforts, we haven’t located the weapon yet. There are a number of things which concern me about this whole incident at this point, but the one priority for me and my team is to locate the firearm to get it out of harms way.

“If it has been hidden, somebody somewhere may know where it is or may come across it soon. I’d remind that person that if they do not come forward they are committing a serious criminal offence.

“The weapon may well have been dumped somewhere, which concerns me even more because it could literally be found by anyone. My advice is do not handle the weapon in any way, and contact us on 999 because we have officers who are equipped to deal with it safely.

“We will continue to do everything we can to locate it,” he added.

The hand gun is very distinctive. It is silver and has a white handle.

A number of addresses have been searched by firearms officers across Rhydyfelin. Specialist search teams have also been working in the area.

Superintendent Clarke added: “Gun crime is extremely rare in South Wales, let alone Rhydyfelin. People may have been alarmed by the police activity and the presence of some armed officers. I stress this is only a precautionary measure. We must ensure the safety of our officers. We do not know if the weapon is loaded, so until we have the firearms in our possession and know for certain, we must presume that it is.”

Neighbourhood officers have been carrying out house to house enquiries in the area, and contact has been made with the education authority to engage with young people about personal safety and the dangers of firearms.

To date, three local people, a 37 year-old male and two boys, aged 12 and 15, have been questioned by officers in relation to the possession of a firearm and criminal damage.

Two sheep were discovered by the farmer who owned them on Tuesday afternoon at around 4.30pm, on land adjacent to Dynea Road, Rhydyfelin.

Helen’s story is one of overcoming personal tragedy, displaying strength of character and determination to raise three children alone, and then be faced with a relatively solitary life in retirement.

But Helen was determined to give parenthood a second chance now that her own children have grown up and flown the nest. Following a lifetime of work in education, particularly children with physical and learning disabilities, Helen is raising two young sisters at her Church Village home.

At the age of just 39, Helen’s husband tragically passed away, leaving her with three small children to raise.

Helen had followed a childcare course at Bridgend College following school and began working in a children’s home in the area where she had experience first hand of children who needed foster carers or adoptive parents. She continued working in various schools and children’s special units throughout her career before retiring from a unit in Pentyrch which catered for young people with cerebal palsy.

”My children had grown up by then and two of my sons are serving in the armed forces, so the house began to feel very empty,” she explained.

“My sister worked full time and together we shared the responsibility of caring for mum who suffered with Alzhiemers Disease, but I still had evenings to myself and it started to feel very lonely. I wanted to do something positive with my time and contribute in some way. That’s when I considered becoming a foster carer and realise it’s the best thing I could have possibly done.

“When raising my own children I had to continue working because I was a single parent. Now I can have a second chance at it and this time I’m a stay-at-home carer, which is so fulfilling.”

Three years ago Helen made the initial contact Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, which responsible for more than 580 children in care.

“The social workers support you every step of the way and in fact it’s a very easy process indeed,” said Helen, aged 55.

“They hold your hand every step of the way, from the first meeting right through to the various aspects of training, the panel of officers who interview you and the first placement of a child in your care. It’s only natural that staff need to know everything about you and your home life to ensure the total care of the child.

”I had several short-term placements at first and from the outset I knew this was for me. The support continues from various social workers and other foster carers I come in regular contact with who help share a lot of experiences. I really do recommend foster caring to others, you don’t know what you’re missing.”

Now Helen’s life has never been busier. Her two long-term placements are sisters aged six and nine, and both of them live busy and happy lives in her care.

“There isn’t much time to spare!” she laughed. “We’re out almost every night of the week with brownies, dance, drama, swimming, netball or badminton and I genuinely believe this has been the making of me.

“The children are wonderful, they consider my own children as their brothers and sister and they call me “nan”. It keeps me active and it keeps me young. It’s the best decision I ever made.”

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Foster Care Service is continually looking for people to join its team of professional, dedicated foster carers, who earn a living by opening their homes and lives to children and young people.

The Council’s policy is that children and young people should remain with their parents where it is safe, and they proactively support families wherever possible. But when this isn’t possible the Council aims to provide placements that can provide a child with stability and a sense of security.

Cllr Annette Davies, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Equalities, explained: “Foster caring is a demanding but hugely rewarding career, welcoming people who have different backgrounds and experiences but share the same commitment to ensure children’s potential is fulfilled.

“With such a variety of foster care schemes available, from short term, long term and respite placements, we will work closely to find a scheme suitable to both the carer and the young person alike.”

All carers receive professional support and training including fist aid, child protection and fire safety, with the chance to secure formal qualifications in childcare. There are generous fees and allowances, and incentives such as free leisure access for all the family.

Potential carers don’t need to own their own property, but will need a spare bedroom. Many people who become foster carers do not have children of their own. They will also have access to support 24 hours a day, seven days a week with a social worker allocated to both the carer and child alike.

The route is about 14 miles (23km) long and links up Dare Valley Country Park, near Aberdare, with Barry Sidings Country Park, north of Pontypridd.

The route, which meanders through St Gwynno and Gelliwion Forests, should be open by next month (March) and has been hailed by horse riders as a “huge bonus” which could bring important economic benefits to the Rhondda Cynon Taff area.

The project is being delivered by Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff in partnership with Forestry Commission Wales and Briars Bridleways, a group of horse riders set up in 2007 in the Cynon Valley to campaign for safe off-road riding facilities.

It is funded by the Heads of the Valleys Programme and is supported by the British Horse Society and the Open Spaces Society.

The route supports Forestry Commission Wales’s commitment to improve equestrian access and increase the provision of safe off-road horse riding, as well as bringing economic benefits to the area.

Briars Bridleways will carry out annual inspections of the trail and is hoping to organise regular events along the route, which also links in with walking and cycling trails and joins existing bridleways.

Forestry Commission Wales has entered into a management agreement with Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff to maintain the route, most of which is over Welsh Government land.

Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff started work this month to upgrade sections of the route and install horse-friendly barriers, along with waymarking.

Stephanie Davies, chairperson of Briars Bridleways, said, “This new horse route is a huge bonus to horse riders in RCT and will hugely increase the amount of safe off-road access to the fantastic countryside here.

“We hope the route will also encourage equestrian tourism and will be of benefit to walkers and cyclists alike.
“Briars Bridleways and the British Horse Society owe a huge thanks to Forestry Commission Wales and Groundwork Merthyr RCT for their help and support in developing the route.”

Richard Phipps, Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff Places Co-ordinator, said, “This important route is a step forward in reaching the objectives of Briars Bridleways, the British Horse Society and local riders to promote safe off-road facilities for horse riders in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

“It builds on the Loop and Links trails concept launched by Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff in 2005 and will improve access to large parts of Rhondda Cynon Taff.”

A leaflet and map should be available in March from Groundwork Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taff via the website www.loopsandlinks.co.uk, Briars Bridleways and at local tourist information centres.

Vision Products, the Councils’ award-winning business which produces PVCu windows and doors, and runs a unique community equipment service and telecare project has launched the scheme in conjunction with special schools throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Ysgol Hen Felin in Ystrad, Rhondda, has worked closely with Vision Products to develop a new apprenticeship scheme that will welcome six young adults with disabilities into the world of work.

Established to provide cost effective employment and development opportunities for people with disabilities, Vision Products has two main premises in Pontyclun and Newport, employing almost 140 members of staff. The six new apprentices will be based at the Pontyclun site in Coedcae Lane Industrial Estate.

This is the first innovative large-scale apprenticeship and training project of its kind for Vision Products and will commence in April 2012.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Performance, Human Resources & Housing Cllr Clayton Willis said: “Vision Products is an exemplar in its field and I’m always impressed by their incredible success story in not only providing employment opportunities for individuals who may otherwise not find long-term work, but also in their continued economic growth.

“The latest phase in their success story is both pioneering and inspiring in its approach. By working closely with Ysgol Hen Felin and providing first-class training opportunities, we hope to lead six initial apprentices on their journey to full-time employment by developing skills and confidence in their abilities.”

The six individuals, who visited Vision Products this week, will be employed on a part-time basis and if possible will include individuals to job share with a year-long contract. In conjunction with Elite  Supported employment agency, Vision Products and Ysgol Hen Felin will provide peer support and mentoring to the group during their term of employment.

As part of the scheme the apprentices will also be offered the opportunity to undertake NVQ training.

On their visit to the Coedcae Lane site, the six apprentices and their parents or carers were all introduced to Simon Bould and Matthew Chick, both former Ysgol Hen Felin pupils who since joining Vision Products four years ago have flourished in their personal development, confidence and knowledge of their job roles.

The new apprentices will have the opportunity to gain experience in any of the different aspects of the company. This could include the Community Equipment Services that offers living aides such as walking frames, hoists, adapted furniture and more to hospitals, day centres, homes, schools and more.

Vision Products also boasts a Telecare independent living scheme that sees sensors installed in homes to monitor activity and enable people to live in their own homes for longer, knowing fire, smoke, temperature, flood, gas leaks and more are being monitored.

Finally the company has developed an award-winning UPVc windows and doors company that offers homes and businesses across the country high-quality windows and doors, complete with installation and a 10-year guarantee, at affordable prices.

Vision Products clients include eight local authorities, health trusts, Church in Wales and education bodies.

Following the many achievements of the past year since the project began in the busy town centre, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s contractors Costain are about to begin work in Market Street.

Completed schemes in Mill Street, Penuel Lane and Church Street are a clear indication of the outstanding transformation taking place in the town centre and further work is currently ongoing in Taff Street, High Street and Penuel Square.

High quality granite materials and new street furniture will also be introduced in Market Street and this  phase has now commenced.

Part of this phase requires a small section of reconstruction of the road and footpaths on the northern end of Market Street at its junction with Taff Street, which will take approximately two weeks to complete, and is set to commence from February 28th 2012.

During this time Market Street will be closed to traffic, following consultation with the Market Company, affected traders and the emergency services, with contingency plans in place to support pedestrian access throughout the closure period and to ensure deliveries to premises in the vicinity of the work.

Cllr Andrew Morgan, Cabinet Member for Transport, Customer Care and Emergency Planning at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council said, “The introduction of another phase of regeneration work in Pontypridd is very exciting as it follows a year of many significant achievements in the town centre.

“We realise that temporary road closures can cause disruptions, but would ask motorists and pedestrians to be patient with us as we endeavour to complete the work as quickly as possible. Ultimately this work will of course benefit the whole of the town centre for residents and visitors alike.”

Tom Kenyon, Project Manager for Costain added, “The closure is essential to progress the street refurbishments in Market Street and we are grateful to the traders and particularly the Market Company itself for their support and cooperation in the scheduling of the closure.”

The £10.5M Pontypridd Town Centre Regeneration project is taking place following the Council securing financial support from the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund and Targeted Match Funding, alongside Council and private sector contributions.

Speaking before the first leadership candidates’ hustings in Pontypridd tomorrow, Leanne Wood said: “I want to see a Plaid Cymru First Minister and to do that we need to win seats in the former industrial and highly populated areas across the south of Wales and north-east and become the biggest party.

“Ruling out a coalition with the Tories would help us to convince those people who currently vote Labour that we are serious about their concerns. Unless we break new ground in areas where Labour currently polls well, we will not be able to become Wales’s largest party. Labour has overseen decades of decline across huge swathes of Wales and they have taken the voters for granted for far too long. That has to change.

“Persuading more people that Plaid is as relevant to them as people in the more traditional Welsh speaking areas and that Plaid will always stand up for all of them is key.

“Successfully appealing to those voters outside Plaid Cymru’s strong areas is crucial for Plaid Cymru to achieve its goal of real independence and, I believe, I’m in a good position to do that,” added Leanne, who is a Welsh learner.

Among high profile party members that have declared their support for Leanne Wood are former Plaid President Dafydd Iwan, MP Jonathan Edwards, ex- MP Adam Price. Assembly Members Bethan Jenkins and Lindsay Whittle, former Plaid chief executive Gwenllian Lansdown Davies and Allan Pritchard, the Plaid leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, have also backed the Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales Central’s leadership bid.

Leanne Wood also received the most nominations – 14 – from constituencies and branches across Wales for her leadership bid.

Despite celebrating her 80th birthday on Sunday, 5 February, Peggy says she sees no reason to stop doing what she loves, with her weekly classes in Rhondda Cynon Taf still pulling in large crowds of keep-fit fanatics.

While many people of her age would be quite content to sit back and take it easy, Peggy is the perfect ambassador of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Leisure for Life campaign.

Her classes at the Michael Sobell Sports Centre in Aberdare are proving as popular as ever, with more and more people than ever before turning to a Rhondda Cynon Taf Leisure Centre in 2012.

Leisure for Life is a highly-successful Rhondda Cynon Taf Council campaign that aims to get people of all ages active and undertaking exercise in a bid to improve their health and wellbeing.

It is all about talking simple steps to make exercise part of your daily routine and reaping the benefits alongside potential weight loss, enhanced fitness, muscle gain or even improved socialisation.

Peggy first took up ‘Keep-Fit’ in the 1960s, at the age of 30, and was immediately bitten by the bug.

“It was always something I had always wanted to do but never had the courage to take the first tentative steps and attend a class,” said Peggy.

“That is why I always encourage people thinking of taking up exercise to actually take the plunge and doing it. Actually walking into a Rhondda Cynon Taf Leisure Centre for the first time is the most difficult part – I know, I did it myself all those years ago.

“Once inside, you will meet so many lovely people, many who will become lifelong friends – we really are like a family community.

“When I first started, the aerobics class I attended was only held once a month, on a Sunday evening, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and lived for my Sunday nights.”

Popmobility classes then gripped the nation and Peggy was quick to adapt and move with the times

“After years of taking part in aerobics classes, I was asked and encouraged to start up my own Popmobility class,” said Peggy.

“It was a great way to exercise to modern-day music and was a massive thing when it first came to Britain from America in the 1970s. I was very nervous at first about taking my own class, it was a huge responsibility, but agreed to do it for a month trial.”

Peggy has not looked back since, and for the past four decades has helped thousands of women to keep fit while at the same time enjoying themselves in a warm and friendly environment.

“After my month’s trial I truly was bitten by the bug – they even had a stage for me to stand on while taking the class. I felt like a pop star,” said Peggy.

“Aerobics classes are ideal for building up your fitness levels, strength, improving your cardio-vascular system as well as overall improvements to the human body.

“The aerobics classes, as well as being very enjoyable for all those who attend them, is also a great way to lose weight.

“After taking part in my aerobics classes, women tell me they feel so much better for it and are so glad they made the effort to get off the sofa and leave the house on a cold and wet night,” said super-fit Peggy.

“So I encourage anyone thinking about giving aerobics a go to take the first step by walking through the leisure centre doors. I assure you that you will not look back – I never did.

“By the second week of my aerobics classes, I had 166 women of all ages taking part – it was absolutely amazing,” added Peggy, who has managed to juggle her family commitments with her healthy lifestyle.

“Aerobics is the sort of activity you can dip in and out of. You do not need to attend the classes every week, although obviously you will get more out them if you do.

“Those who attend regularly become part of a very close-knit group. We are like one big family and welcome new members each week. There is a great unique bond between all of us and are there supporting each other through the good times and the difficult times.

“Building up the courage to take that first step is the biggest hurdle you need to overcome. Once inside the classes you will soon relax, feel comfortable and enjoy yourself.

And at the age of 80, Peggy can still give her younger members a run for their money in the fitness stakes.

“My youngest member is 16-years-old and ages vary up into the Sixties. I even have a few 70-year-olds who take part in my classes,” said Peggy.

“All are welcome at me classes, from beginners to the more experienced. It is very much a social occasion as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle.”

Peggy Sullivan hosts her aerobics class at the Michael Sobell Sports Centre, The Ynys, Aberdare, every Tuesday from 7.30pm until 8.30pm. Females of all ages and ablities are welcome to attend.

An immediate investigation has been launched after staff at a café in Pontypridd Market received a visit from a group of men who said there were from Environmental Health and stated the Food Hygiene Certificate of the premises was expired and they would close the business immediately unless £500 was handed over on-the-spot.

The business refused to pay and immediately raised the alarm. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and South Wales Police are now investigating and information has been sent out to all businesses.

Business managers and their staff are urged to be aware that all Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Environmental Health Officers carry photographic ID cards and official authorisation documents. They never, under any circumstances, ask for payment of any kind.

David Jones, Head of Community Protection at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, said: “This is the first incident of its kind and, luckily, no money was handed over and the alarm was raised immediately.

“We are hoping it is an isolated incident, but wish to raise the alarm and ensure every business is aware of this suspicious incident, so they can take action accordingly.

“All are reminded to check the photographic identification of visitors claiming to be from the Council, or any other public sector organisation, ringing the necessary organisation if needed to check the visitor is who they say they are.”

Those who receive a visit from someone claiming to be an Environmental Health officer is urged to check their credentials and report suspicious activity and visitors to the Council on 01443 425637, who can confirm if the visitor is genuine or not.

The Met Office has stepped up its weather alert and people are urged to be prepared for snow and freezing conditions.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is doing all it can to prepare for inclement weather, including gritting of the highways network so it is treated, should snow and ice arrive.

Other essential frontline services, such as snow ploughs, town centre and community snow clearance remain on standby. Motorists are reminded that, should predicted weather arrive, driving could be dangerous.

They should be aware that while conditions may not seem too bad in their area, other parts of the County Borough, particularly higher ground and the Mountain Roads of Bwlch, Rhigos and Maerdy, could be affected and they should take care and be prepared.

Members of the club received awards for their achievements within the Korean Martial Art and for their wider voluntary activities, and afterwards put on a display of their skills, including 9 year old Anton Lloyd Jones of Penywaun who thrilled the audience by performing a jump-flying side-kick over two people to break a wooden board.

Mrs Chapman said: “I was honoured to be invited and share in the success of the club’s members, and was very impressed by the skill and dedication they showed”.

Tang Soo Do is renowned for its kicking techniques, and the club, affiliated to the International Tang Soo Do Federation, has been based in Penywaun and Hirwaun for over 20 years. The club helps develop confidence, respect and self-control amongst its members, who are drawn from Hirwaun, Penywaun and Trecynon, and from the Merthyr area.

Mrs Chapman added: “The class is not for profit, and receives no funding. I was impressed by the martial arts skills the students displayed. I was also struck by the leadership skills the class helps its students develop, and by the sheer variety of community activities the club and its members have been involved in. I can’t recommend the club enough!”

Class instructor Siân Moran said: “Everyone really enjoyed showing their skills and the award winners felt honoured to receive their awards from such as special guest. Christine touched the hearts of the parents and families with her comments about the support they give their children to train and compete, on behalf of everyone I like to thank Christine for supporting us and making the evening truly special for us all”.

The extensive property on High Street is owned by successful entrepreneur Philip Worthing, the former Managing Director and owner of Abacus Recruitment Agency which was formed in 1999 and had more than 450 workers on its books.

Mr Worthing’s property has been vacant for a significant period, awaiting interest from potential tenants. When he heard from fellow businesspeople how successful the Council’s Townscape Enhancement Programme was to refurbish commercial properties, he made an application which resulted in him receiving  £100,000 , a contribution of almost 70% towards the over all cost of the works.

Working closely with the Council’s Regeneration and Planning Team, the new business premises will be totally renovated and upgraded throughout.

The Townscape Enhancement Programme is a key element to the Council’s £10.5million regeneration scheme of Pontypridd, which has greatly impressed Mr Worthing himself.

“Pontypridd is a thriving town thanks to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council. If other councils took the same attitude with regards regeneration projects then they would have a thriving town like Pontypridd too,” he explained.

Contractors Admiral Construction Design Limited are now totally refurbishing the property which is being re-plastered, painted, with a new roof, windows and entire shop front. The two new businesses will occupy the upper and lower floor.

“I heard how good the Townscape Enhancement Programme was from fellow property owners in the town centre and I must say that Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has been superb in their delivery,” he said.

“Officers were incredibly supportive and helped me every step of the way, making the process very easy indeed. It is a first-class project and I would encourage others to take up the opportunity while it’s there.

“Along with Admiral Construction, another professional outfit who are most accommodating and cost effective, I must say I’m delighted with the scheme and plan to have the property completed and ready for business by the end of February.”

Through the Townscape Enhancement Programme, funding of up to 70% is being made available to commercial property owners. This is to enhance their properties through high quality improvements, creating an attractive townscape, and instilling a strong sense of pride and identity of Pontypridd for shoppers, residents and business people alike.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Safer Communities Cllr Paul Cannon explained: “The opportunity to enhance Pontypridd’s townscape is one not to be missed and I would encourage many more property owners to apply for the funding support as soon as possible. Together we can recreate the very image of Pontypridd for all those who work, visit and shop in the town centre.

“Council officers have visited over seventy interested properties, with over a dozen known to be working on detailed plans. This level of interest and cooperation from the private sector in the current economic climate is a real indication that Pontypridd is on the up.

“Creating a visually attractive town centre will increase confidence in Pontypridd and encourage private sector investment. This in turn should generate local employment opportunities, increase the amount of visitors, create stronger and more diverse businesses, and foster a vibrant and sustainable economic centre.”

The programme, which powerfully addresses the issues of health, crime and citizenship, is used as part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Building the Future Together project and Services for Young People.

For an eight week period the programme, is being introduced for the third time in Porth where it uses the game of Rugby Union to teach participants important values that will enable them to take positive and definite steps towards employment.

The pioneering scheme, supported by Sky Sports, works with young men aged between 15 and 19 with the aim to re-engage them in education, training or employment.

Primarily, the School of Hard Knocks is aimed at helping unemployed people take significant steps towards finding work that is sustainable and realistic. It helps users grow in confidence, learn responsibility, team work, respect and discipline under pressure, many of the qualities which potential employers look for in a new recruit.

Another key aim is to introduce participants to the game of rugby as a means of embracing and maintaining a healthy and socially positive lifestyle. Therefore, in addition to the coaching and employment elements, the programme addressed healthy eating and nutrition, sexual health, men’s health, injury management and physical fitness.

The life and employment training deals with a whole range of categories, from dealing with aggression and understanding fear to discussing diversity, entrepreneurship, compiling a CV, job searching and interview coaching.

Welsh and British Lions rugby star Scott Quinnell, said:“It is one of the biggest achievements in my rugby career to be part of this; I have seen a group of boys turn into men.”

The project returns to Porth from February 9th. Travelling expenses will be reimbursed, food is provided and Building the Future Together will provide new rugby boots and kit for participants. Following completion of the programme participants will have a robust support plan in place for them to achieve their training and employment aims.

Cllr Eudine Hanagan, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning said: “The School of Hard Knocks is a hugely challenging and highly motivating and inspiring project run in conjunction with our Building the Future Together project which endeavours to give young people the very best start in life.

“This element tackles those who find it difficult gaining sustainable employment and thanks to such a pioneering new method of tackling this issue, we are sure of making some major, positive changes to young people’s lives.”

Building the Future Together is a  £14million project, part financed by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government supports 11 to 19 years olds with its key aim being to raise aspirations, boost confidence and support pathways to further learning and employment.

Working in partnership with the Council’s Services for Young People, Youth Offending Service, Careers Wales, Job Centre Plus and Secondary Schools, Building the Future Together aims to improve the life chances and career opportunities of many thousands of young people in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Amanda, who lives in Llantrisant, is a wonder in the kitchen and cooks up mouth-watering treats all year round. She sells her wares at the Farmers’ Market, which takes place in the rear car park of Tonyrefail Leisure Centre on the second Tuesday of every month.

The next Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Farmers’ Market takes place on Tuesday, February 14 – Valentine’s Day – and Amanda, of Seasons Farm Foods,  will be selling her ‘heart-warming’ delights, sure to melt the hearts of all romantics.

The Farmers’ Market, organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, will be the ideal place to buy your loved one something special on the day.

Mrs Rees said: “I sell an extensive range of baked products, including pies, ready meals and our very popular traditional faggots and gravy all year round.

“But I love Valentine’s Day, and for those romantics with a sweet tooth I will be selling homemade cakes, tarts and puddings, along with cupcakes at the next Farmers’ Market.

Seasons Farm Foods was established in 2009 as a small venture selling excess home-grown meats and eggs to family, friends and work colleagues.

“We were so thrilled with the positive feedback we received and the endless requests for more that we decided to expand our range and outlets,” said Mrs Rees.

“We believe that more than ever, people want to know the source and origin of their food, preferring to purchase homemade and locally produced goods to those mass produced for the supermarkets.

“Due to our rural location, we decided not to open a shop on site at the farm, preferring to show off our products at the Farmers’ Market and food festivals.”

The Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Farmers’ Markets are just one of the many events and special projects now undertaken in Tonyrefail.

Leader of the Council and Member for Tonyrefail East, Councillor Russell Roberts, said: “The Farmers’ Markets are a great asset to Rhondda Cynon Taf and showcase the impressive produce available locally.

“I regularly visit the Farmers’ Market at Tonyrefail and never fail to be overwhelmed by the products on sale. I am delighted to see the monthly events so well supported.

“When the previous market ended, we were approached by disappointed residents asking what we as local Councillors could do, and I am pleased to say that following our interventions, the Council’s Events Team has been able to set up this successful Farmers’ Market initiative.”

Fellow Councillor, Cllr Eudine Hanagan, Member for Tonyrefail West, said: “The Farmers’ Markets are a big boost for Tonyrefail and will help businesses throughout the town due to the higher footfall they generate each month and the knock-on effect as people come here to spend their money.

“I am sure the Valentine’s Day Farmers’ Market will be very popular and build on the popularity it gained throughout the last year.”

The next Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Farmers’ Market takes place at the rear car park of Tonyrefail Leisure Centre on Tuesday, February 14, from 10am until 2pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Many stalls will be lined up with a variety of home-made and home-grown products, all fresh and guaranteed to impress. A number of craft stands will also be set up on the day, offering their own range of interesting and unique products.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council needs all its residents to Love Where They Live and join the fight against waste in order to keep our County Borough a clean, green place for all to enjoy.

It is proud of the effort so many people, from all walks of life go to in order to create and protect eco-friendly households, streets, neighbourhoods and communities.

From ensuring they recycle as much material as possible, to raising awareness of environmental issues in the community, volunteering and even clearing litter left behind by others, people are making a difference and Loving Where They Live in so many different ways.

The effort being undertaken by people is inspiring and also shows how living a cleaner, greener lifestyle can also be great fun and bring communities together.

That is why the Council is looking forward to its annual flagship Love Where You Live event.

The Love Where You Live 2012 awards will be held to celebrate and highlight the excellent work that is taking place by individuals, community groups and Streetcare staff to make Rhondda Cynon Taf a cleaner, greener, County Borough.

Entering the Love Where You Live Awards is simple; you just need to fill out a short entry form that must be submitted by 30th March 2012. Applications will be placed before an independent panel of judges. The chosen finalists will be visited during May before the overall winner of each category is decided.

The awards take place every summer in the Muni Arts Centre, Pontypridd and are set to take place on 12th June 2012. But the Council wants you to start thinking of possible nominees already so plenty of applications can be received.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Frontline Services Cllr Anthony Christopher said: “Annually the Love Where You Live Awards has grown to become one of the highlights of the Rhondda Cynon Taf calendar as it involves so many different sections of the community who are committed to improving the local environment for the benefit of everyone.

“The entire concept, which was the brainchild of our Streetcare Team, has long-since been recognised as a positive, and even pioneering, approach to educating and inspiring the general public to assist us in improving their community.

“This is our opportunity to not only congratulate them on their achievements, but encourage others to follow suit. By working together we can make Rhondda Cynon Taf an even cleaner and greener place to live, work and visit.”

The project which is funded by the Welsh Government’s Regional Transport Plan Grant, via South East Wales Transport Alliance (SEWTA) has been developed by the Council and forms part of the Sewta regional approach to encouraging travel by rail.

Designed by RCT and supported by Arriva Trains Wales and Network Rail, the refurbishment and extension of the existing facility is being carried out by contractor BAM Nuttall Ltd.

The project will include:-

• Installation of new drainage and culvert protection to the large culvert that runs underneath the site,
• Street lighting,
• CCTV
• New footways,
• New entrance/exit point,
• Carriageway surfacing,
• Increased car parking spaces from 30 to 130,
• Disabled parking facilities and Disabled access.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Customer Care and Chairman of SEWTA, Cllr Andrew Morgan said: “The Aberdare Park and Ride Scheme will be of enormous benefit to many thousands of train users.

“The £477k worth of investment will provide a first-class Park and Ride facility with 130 spaces, a lit car park with CCTV coverage, new footpaths and new entrance and exit points to the platform.

“We are confident that in delivering such a scheme we will not only reduce traffic congestion but also encourage even more people in to the popular town centre.”

“The scheme also complements the ongoing regeneration of Aberdare and the Administration’s commitment to improve access to public transport.”

Work will commence late January and is anticipated to be open to the public by the Spring of 2012. The existing car park will remain closed during the course of the works.

So that the next phase of the £7.7m project can be completed, temporary road closures are required along Cannon Street and Commercial Street on various dates starting from 29th January. This will ensure that essential excavation and reconstruction works using high quality stone paving can be carried out.

The closures will operate as follows:

Canon Street, from its junction with High Street to its junction with Cardiff Street will be closed from 0830 hours to 1400 hours on Sunday 29th January 2012 and Sunday 5th February 2012 and if necessary between the same times on subsequent Sundays until the works are complete.

Commercial Street will be closed from Monday 30th January 2012 to 13th November 2012 or until the works are complete.

Whilst the road closures are in place there will be clearly signposted diversions in place which are:

Canon Street – From the northern side of the closure, proceed via High Street, Gadlys Roundabout, Route A4233, A4059 Aberdare Bypass, Tinney’s Roundabout and Cardiff Street to the southern side of the closure. Vehicles approaching from the south will not be affected by the closure.

From the western side of the closure, proceed via Canon Street, Victoria Square, High Street, Seymour Street, Gloucester Street and Duke Street to the eastern side of the closure.

To ensure that the town operates business as usual, during the closures access will be maintained at all times for pedestrians, emergency services vehicles and delivery vehicles.

The Council would like to thank residents for their patience during this time as it is not possible to complete these improvement works without some disruption.

Cllr Paul Cannon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Safer Communities, said: “The regeneration works in the town are now progressing well and we are on schedule with the plans that will totally transform this historic town.

“Some of the changes can already be seen in the town and we look forward to seeing even more over the coming months which I’m sure will be very impressive.

“We thank everyone for their co-operation and patience over the recent weeks and residents are encouraged to bear with us whilst we carry out these next steps as they form an invaluable part of the scheme.”

The project also includes town centre property improvements, under the Aberdare Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) and Townscape Enhancement Programme (TEP). These offer financial support to businesses and property owners to make external and internal building improvements to enhance the quality of the premises and bring disused space back into use.

The Council secured the £7.7m investment package for Aberdare in November 2010, including monies from the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund, Heads of the Valleys Programme and the Targeted Match Fund. The remainder of the funding package is provided by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and the private sector.

In a bid to reduce, re-use and recycle the Council has teamed up with the local charity and is ensuring that anything brought to its Community Recycling Centre in Llwydcoed ends up in the right place.

From white goods to sofas if it’s in reasonable condition and in working order your old rubbish could become someone else’s treasure.

Residents are advised of the best place for their waste when they arrive at the Community Recycling Centre, Llwydcoed and a dedicated, covered area has now been set up, so that Too Good Too Waste can collect the items and ensure they go to a good home. The charity is currently being contacted by local families who are in need of children’s bedroom furniture and is asking residents to donate any unwanted beds, wardrobes and drawers.

This service is currently being piloted and is only available at the Llwydcoed Community Recycling Centre. However you can still take your other recyclable materials to any of the five recycling centres across the County Borough.

The Community Recycling Centres are based in the following locations across the County Borough:

• Ty Amgen, Llwydcoed CF44 0BX
• Cymmer Road, Dinas CF39 9BL
• Nantygwyddon Road, Gelli CF41 7TL
• North Road, Ferndale CF43 4RS
• Treforest Industrial Estate CF37 5TT

All of these facilities will cater for all recycling needs, including white goods, cardboard, clothing, plastics, light fittings, wood, glass, metal, engine oil, fluorescent tubes, plasterboards, old toys, paint, tyres, old tv’s and lots more. There will also be a reuse store so that anything which is reusable can be and this will dovetail into the new welsh Government Sector Plans for reuse.

All five centres are manned and the attendants are happy to advise residents on recycling and assist them in disposing of their household material.

The centres are open Monday – Sunday 8:00 to 19:30 from April – October and Monday – Sunday 8:00 to 17:30 from November – March.

Councillor Anthony Christopher, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Frontline Services, said: “The Community Recycling Centres makes recycling easy for residents as the sites are dedicated to their needs. The addition of the too good too waste area in Llwydcoed will now mean that items that can be re-used will go to a good home and treasured for even longer, instead of going to landfill.

“The facilities on offer across Rhondda Cynon Taf mean there is no excuse not to recycle. From dedicated recycling centres to food, dry waste recycling and bulky collections from your door, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has got it covered.”

If you have something that you would like to donate or need collected but feel it’s”too good too waste” simply call 01443 680090 for more information. Any items that are collected must be in a suitable condition for reuse.  Any material items collected (mattresses, sofas, cushions etc) must have a fire retardant label.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council continues to respond to the inclement weather warning and has completed a number of gritting routes in preparation for snowfall predicted for late this evening (Sunday) or overnight into Monday.

Already, snow has fallen and settled on the higher ground within the County Borough and residents, especially motorists, are urged to take care when using roads, especially the three mountain roads of Maerdy, Rhigos and Bwlch, which have higher altitudes.

Any snow or freezing conditions that do arise overnight will have an impact on roads and streets, so residents are urged take extra care.

Should inclement weather affect service delivery, their website will be updated as soon as possible. Any school closures caused by the weather will be updated immediately on to the schools closure page by headteachers direct.

This week Leader of the Council Cllr Russell Roberts joined Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Safer Communities Cllr Paul Cannon and Cabinet Member for Transport, Customer Care & Emergency Planning Cllr Andrew Morgan to see the latest phases underway.

The Council Leader said: “The £10.5million programme of improvements to the town centre are taking shape with the progress being made on the street works becoming visible for all to see.

“Rhondda Cynon Taf Council was delighted to secure this money from the Welsh Government and for their support for our vision and plans for Pontypridd which have been so painstakingly prepared. It has taken a considerable length of time to get to this stage and has only been possible by having continuity and stability within the Council and its strategic planning.

“There is plenty going on in Pontypridd; from the new Sainsbury’s and eagerly anticipated Riverside Shopping Centre to the railway station improvements and recently erected Roll of Honour Memorial in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park.

“The current investment in Pontypridd is unprecedented and will be make for a better town, restoring it to its former status. It is long overdue but it is now happening for real.”

The councillors viewed many of the completed areas of the streetscape where high quality granite materials which have now been introduced in the shopping thoroughfare, and transformed areas in Mill Street and Church Street giving a clear indication of how outstanding the streetscape will be once completed.

The introduction of new street furniture has also begun with the first of the street benches installed on High Street. During the visit the councillors also met with the owner of the latest property to receive funding through the Townscape Enhancement Programme to refurbish their commercial premises.

The Council’s contractors Costain, recommenced their phased work at the start of the year following a break over Christmas to assist traders. Works are now focusing on Taff Street, High Street, the Church Street junction with Gelliwastad Road, and Market Street.

The transformation of Penuel Square will also continue with the restoration of the Fountain.

The work in Pontypridd comes alongside the redevelopment of the Taff Vale Shopping Precinct, which has now been demolished and a new Riverside Shopping Centre will soon be under construction.

A £153,000 refurbishment project of Pontypridd Museum has been completed along with a £2million restoration of the Pontypridd train station canopy. Work on the £50million Sainsburys development of the Brown Lenox site has also commenced with the frame of the new store already in place.

The £10.5M Pontypridd Town Centre Regeneration project is taking place following the Council securing financial support from the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund and Targeted Match Funding, alongside Council and private sector contributions.
