St David’s Day will be celebrated in style in Prestatyn this year – with youngsters taking part in a parade to raise the profile of the Welsh language in the town.

Pupils from four of the town’s schools (Ysgol y Llys, Bodnant, Ysgol Penmorfa and Ysgol Clawdd Offa) will take part in the parade on Thursday, March 1 and will sing Welsh songs and wearing traditional Welsh costumes.  Pupils will then split into groups to continue with performance at various locations along the High Street.

A competition has also been arranged to publicise the event, with the winners from each school receiving a cash sum to open a savings account with the Principality Building Society. The competition will be judged by the Mayor of Prestatyn.

Flags and banners will be installed prior to the event and the town’s Business Forum will be distributing balloons to local shopkeepers to create a carnival atmosphere on the day.

As a result of the parade, the top part of the High Street will be closed between 9am and 11.30am.

Dyfan Phillips, Headteacher of Ysgol y Llys, said: “This really is a great opportunity for pupils to celebrate their Welshness and heritage  through taking part in a celebration event to mark this nationally important day in the calendar.

“We are taking this chance to work with local businesses to raise the profile of Welsh as a living language and we hope that the people of Prestatyn will enjoy and appreciate the Welsh language being spoken and sang as part of our celebrations.”

The event is also being supported by Prestatyn Town Council and Denbighshire County Council, with the support of local businesses.
