Schoolchildren have been awarded for their arty efforts towards making their community safer.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has been working with pupils at Blaengwawr Primary School to design signs for a new Safe Routes in the Community scheme that has been delivered in Aberaman.

Talented pupils showed off their skills in a competition organised by the Road Safety Unit to win the chance to have their designs form part of the £250,000 schemes.

The winning pupils were presented with their prizes during a ceremony at the school, attended by members of the Road Safety Unit, the Construction Projects Unit that has delivered the scheme, local councillor Linda De Vet and Cllr Andrew Morgan, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Road Safety.

The event also included an overview of the new Safe Routes in the Community Scheme, which has been delivered this year thanks to investment from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Welsh Assembly Government.

The aim of the scheme is create a safe atmosphere for pedestrians in the area, and includes a 20mph zone – promoted by the designs from the children – and new markings and pavement design to ensure pedestrians remain safe.

Winning entries were:

1st Prize – drawings incorporated into 20mph sign, a framed drawing and a £15 voucher

Cllr Andrew Morgan, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Road Safety said: “We have worked hard to deliver this much-needed scheme in Aberaman and know it will deliver significant benefit not only for the school and its pupils, but also for the wider community.

“I am so pleased the pupils at Blaengwawr have been given the chance to play their part in this scheme, using the knowledge and skills they have secured from their work with the Road Safety Unit to create designs that warn motorists to slow down.”
