A North Wales Police-led speed awareness day held on Anglesey on Wednesday reaped ‘very good results’, according to its organisers.

Following complaints from the residents of Amlwch and surrounding areas, local Community Beat Manager PC Dafydd Pritchard arranged a speed awareness day to try and combat the problem of speeding drivers.

Working in partnership with the Safer Roads Officer for Anglesey County Council, Terfel Jones, as well as the Go Safe partnership (formally Arrive Alive), the team monitored vehicles on various roads in the area. Offending drivers – including those who were seen using mobile phones behind the wheel and failing to wear seatbelts were either warned or prosecuted.

PC Pritchard said: “During our public meetings, the number one complaint is speeding vehicles in different areas of Amlwch and the surrounding villages. So, in direct response to these reports we decided to hold this day and situated ourselves at the locations which have caused concern to local residents.

“The Go Safe van monitored the main roads and Terfel and I recorded the speed of vehicles along the smaller roads using speed indication devices.

“In answering to complaints from the public, we also visited locations of concern such as Allt Nebo in Penysarn, where surveying equipment will soon be placed. The results of such surveys will then be used to determine how serious the speeding problem is in that area and what action is then appropriate to address the problem.

He added: “This was a very successful campaign and our presence was greatly appreciated by members of the community. We have hopefully been able to educate offending drivers as to the manner of their behaviour with the hope that they will consider how they drive in the future.”
