A ‘Dragon Sport’ girls’ football festival will officially launch six brand new 5 a side 3G floodlit football pitches at Deeside Leisure Centre in Chester Road West, Queensferry, on 19th November.

The 5 a side construction work is the first phase of a major £4m redevelopment at the site, the largest leisure centre in North Wales, which is run by Flintshire County Council.

The launch football festival will also mark the tenth anniversary of Dragon Sport, an initiative for 7-11 year olds, funded by the National Lottery, which encourages greater participation in a range of sports.

Councillor Dennis Hutchinson, Executive Member for Leisure at Flintshire County Council, said: “We are delighted that the Dragon Sport football festival can officially open our new pitches. This festival marks a significant step forward in the development of girls’ football in the county, which continues to be the fastest growing female sport in Wales. The floodlit pitches will provide an ideal venue for this and many other sports for years to come.”

The new pitches will open to the public on Monday 15 November, offering:

  • Adult 6 a side leagues
  • Futsal leagues / courses
  • Junior courses for boys and girls
  • Junior leagues
  • Casual pitch bookings
  • Block pitch bookings

Detailed design has started on the rest of the redevelopment, being carried out by leisure specialist company Alliance Leisure Services, which includes health and fitness, extreme sports and a spa.

The second phase of work, which is due to start in 2011, will include the conversion of an old first floor nightclub into an 80-station health and fitness suite, two fitness studios and new changing rooms.

The ‘extreme’ facility will be created in the old ice rink, housing a climbing wall, high ropes course and a skate park for boarding, inline skates and BMX bikes. New catering facilities will also serve both the ‘extreme’ facility and the current ice rink. An under sevens’ soft play zone will also be installed.

Locals will also be able to relax and unwind at the centre as the final phase of the redevelopment will see the introduction of an elegant but affordable spa.
