The premier wild brown trout fishery in Wales is aiming to hook youngsters on the art of fly fishing.

The fishery at Tal-y-llyn, near Tywyn, in the Snowdonia National Park, is launching a ‘Try The Fly’ programme.

“It’s something special for youngsters who live within travelling distance of Tal-y-llyn,” said Phil Wood, pictured, the head ghillie at the fishery.

“We care passionately about fishing at Tal-y-llyn and we also care about nurturing the fishermen of tomorrow.

“The fishery was recently one of the host venues for the Commonwealth fishing tournament, which was an outstanding international success.

“Experience tells us that people catch the fishing bug early and we want to do our very best to encourage youngsters to take part in a hugely rewarding sport.”

The scheme offers young, local people up to 16 years old the chance to fly fish at Tal-y-Llyn.
Mr Wood added: “Whether they are experimenting for the first time, or wishing to expand their repertoire of skills, youngsters can come and join us on the first and third Sunday of each month for a morning’s fishing – absolutely free!

“Fully qualified and trained coaches will be on hand to teach the young anglers of all abilities and ages the art of fly casting and fly fishing.”

The first ‘Try The Fly’ will take place at Tal-y-llyn on Sunday, August 8, and every first and third Sunday until the end of season. The young fishermen become part of the new Tal-y-llyn Young Anglers Club.

The closed season will see a monthly fly tying demonstration and tuition to ensure that age old techniques are passed onto the up-and-coming generation of anglers.

All fishing tackle hire and tuition will be provided free of charge and parents will be welcome for coffee – and to watch the action – from Ty’n y Cornel Hotel on the banks of the 222-acre fishery.
