A busy Minor Injuries Unit is set to reopen in weeks according to Shadow Health Minister Darren Millar.
The Clwyd West AM visited Colwyn Bay Hospital yesterday to meet with local health chiefs to discuss the future of the hospital.
The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board provoked an angry response from local residents when it announced the temporary closure of Colwyn Bay’s Minor Injuries Unit in December last year.
During the visit Darren met with the Acting Chief Executive of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Geoff Lang, GP locality lead, Dr Keith Owens, Dr Olwen Williams and Matron Debbie Panteladakis before touring the hospital to meet with staff and patients.
The Clwyd West AM was also joined by Conwy Council’s Carers Champion, Cllr Cheryl Carlisle.
Following the visit, Darren said:
“Colwyn Bay Hospital provides an important range of inpatient and outpatient services and clinics for patients and it is crucial that these services are maintained.
“The closure of the Minor Injuries Unit in Colwyn Bay last year was a huge blow for the community and caused a lot of uncertainty for hard-working staff at the hospital.
“I am pleased that the Health Board have given me a firm commitment that they will re-open the Minor Injuries Unit on the 1st April and I look forward to seeing it fully functional again.”
Cllr Cheryl Carlisle, Conwy Carers Champion added:
“Community hospitals are an integral part of the Welsh NHS which help to make services more accessible for patients and Colwyn Bay is a key part of the health network on the North Wales coast.”
