Architect award for Margam Discovery Centre

The Margam Discovery Centre, set in the historic setting of Margam Park in Port Talbot, has picked up a top design award.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), a professional organisation which champions better buildings, has declared the unique building a top 2010 winner for its design and construction.

The design team was Loyn and Co and the Design and Research Unit at the Welsh School of Architecture.

Neath Port Talbot Council teamed up with the Field Studies Council to provide a centre for residential education and training in heritage and conservation studies.

The £5.6 million flagship project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the Welsh Assembly Government’s Local Regeneration Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund and was constructed using sustainable materials.

“Setting a building in such a historic landscape was a major challenge,” says Council Leader, Ali Thomas.

“My congratulations go to all who have been involved in the successful project. The Discovery Centre plays a major role in education both adults and children in environmental matters.

“I am delighted that the project has been recognised as worthy of a RIBA award.

“This is not the first time that the Council has won such an award. The Gateway Development at Baglan Energy Park achieved similar recognition in 2002.

“This kind of recognition of excellence reinforces the Council’s commitment to architectural quality.”
